I saw a post where someone corrected another user about the use of the term "z-bed" which was being confused with a standard westy bed. That got me thinking, and this is probably a really stupid question, but what's the difference? Not trying to be facetious, I really want to know. Thanks in advance for the info.

The bartender looks over at him and says "Would you like a beer sir".
Descarte thinks for a second and replies "I think not".
And he diappeared forever.

well, i searched for a pic but i'm not sure if in fact the one i was looking at was the z-bed. i think this is one https://www.thesamba.com/vw/classifieds/pix/1834858.jpg and the westy bed http://www.thesamba.com/vw/archives/dic/pix/zbed1.jpg is built on the storage frame. i guess what i am trying to show is the z-bed looks home made and the westy looks like it was well thought out and made for the bus/vanagon. https://www.thesamba.com/vw/gallery/pix/359642.jpg http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=214427&highlight=bed http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=288759 ok here are a few more links to the subject. the first pic is in fact not a z-products after mkt bed, but the the new added links show the real thing. call it what you want, but z-bed sounds kinda silly to me because of the z-products in oregon that went out of business about 10 yrs ago. i have always called the westfalia bed the fold out bed, i guess z-bed sounds more sophisticated. i have a 12 piece curtain set from them for the vanagon .

IIRC z-beds are what you find in regular vanagons and carats. They are about the dimensions of a queen size bed. The westy bed is quite a bit narrower then the zbed due to the cabinets. Come to think of it i guess the carat bed is narrower too since the plastic paneling is different then a vanagon gl. When i had my non westy vanagon sleeping was great as both dogs and my wife could all sleep comfortably on that bed. We can't all be on the westy bed, so my wife sleeps up in poptop Wink
as far as design they are both stellar.

A Z-bed is a set of brackets that came from a now defunct company called Zproducts to use with a standard seat cushions into a "bed". They weren't particularly comfortable. About 99% of the people who claim they have a Zbed do not.

These are Zbed hinges being repopped at Bus Depot. https://www.busdepot.com/zbed

There were some US made bay window bus campers that used a similar arrangement.

I know, necropost, but it comes up often.

From my experience Z-beds, correctly labeled or not, use a torsion bar or two between the brackets on either side. This makes it so you cannot put good speaker holes in the board beneath the bench, torsion bar is in the way behind it.

On a Westy, I believe the two brackets are independent so you have more room under there.
