had this issue for a while. replaced shoes cylinders springs bearings all that. my next part is the drum. if its out of round will it squeeze the shoes so to speak and make the springs flex? thats what it sounds like and that the picture i have in my head. sound changes with speed and only when brakes are applied. just curious if anyone else has had this problem. its not the lugs theres no clean spots on any parts where anything is rubbing.

Does sound occur with Bus parked?
If the drum was out of round you would have a pulsing grabbing feel to the brakes. On the other hand the drum brake shoe surface could be worn in a conical shape and cause the shoes to shift.

Have you adjusted the new shoes once or twice in the weeks since installing them? New shoes need to wear into the same diameter as the drums.
Did you adjust the parking brake for five clicks after adjusting the shoes the first time? That way you can use the parking brake as a measuring device to keep shoes adjusted properly.

there are no"clean" areas where any of the hardware inside is rubbing on any other part.

Post a pic of the brakes, with the drum off on that side. Obviously you either installed some bad parts, or did some installation incorrectly.
Bad bearings, worn backing plate, bad springs, etc |

its a front brake so the parking brake has no effect. doesnt make sound until the brakes are applied. the more pressure applied the louder the sound its only when the shoes are being pressed out and making contact with the drum. thats why i think its a high spot in either the drum or the shoe. ill get a pic and post it today

Again, did you adjust the brakes since installing them?
Yes, the parking brake should not make a difference with a noise in the front, but it will still tell you when you need to readjust all the brake stars.

yes i adjusted the brakes, havent driven it enough to readjust. right side does not make the noise and both side are put together the same. im getting the drums turned tomorrow well see it that changes anything.

I think you have the return springs mounter on the wrong side of the pads. It will hold the pads tilted and not square to the drum surface. The clicking sound you hear each time you push the brakes is the pad moving and seating.

| Sometimes there can be a ridge on the drum that catches the side of the brake. Make sure that you get them turned all the way in. Had that happen once. |

Just got through putting a 55-63 front brake drum back onto the sprindle after packing the bearings and I looks like both front brake spring are touching the backside of the brake drum; just slightly, enough to barely make a noise turing the drum. I used new brake shoes, and new Brazilian springs, which seemed to work just fine. The shoes are centered as best I can get them and spaced evenly around the inner spacer.
What's the fix for the rubbing springs? The adjusters are backed off 100%.
Will adjusting the brake change the position of the springs enough so they don't make contact?

I cant remember exactly, but try flipping or reversing the springs. It may change the orientation slightly
Ive also seen springs that someone put a slight twist in them to clear. |

Well, problem solved. New incorrect (I assume they are 64-67) Brazilian springs removed and 60 year old original German springs with the correct bend installed.
They lined up around the center spacer almost perfectly and do not rub on the inside snout of the drum. Funny how the correct original parts just drop right into place.
