I have Kenwood stereo in my 91 Westy. On a recent trip, the fuse for the stereo on the main panel blew. I replaced it then realized after I did neither the right channel nor the rear speakers were working, though they had been previously. Thinking it was the head unit, I bought the same model used on ebay. When I plugged that in I had the same issue. The fuse on the head unit itself seems to be OK. I'm stumped. Any thoughts on how to track down the culprit?

Try checking for continuity and resistance across each speaker, from the wires at the head unit. You should read something like 4 ohms for each speaker.

I would also check if there's any continuity between each speaker wire, and chassis ground, that could indicate a short i.e. wire got pinched somewhere.

Also check for resistance between the head unit ground wire and chassis ground, it shouldn't read more than about 0.2 ohms.

Confirm voltage at the head unit power wire is 12+ volts with engine off or 13+ volts engine running.

Is there an inline fuse in the wiring in the dash?

I don't believe so--just the fuse in the head unit and the fuse in the main panel. What's odd is that unit works on the left channel in the front, but not the right channel in the front or either of the rear speakers, and everything worked before the fuse in the main panel blew.

Sounds like you have ruled out a faulty head unit. And I assume your balance (L/R) and fader (F/R) settings are proper. I would check the connections between the head unit harness and each speaker lead next. Then check the connections at the rear of each speaker. You don’t by chance have a separate amp do you?
