https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/fitment

for some reason people always throw this word around and its confusing because they mean to say 'fit' saying 'fitment' doesnt make you sound like an authority. it makes you sound like a british person referring to furniture, or someone talking about wheels. you can say ' check the fit of the alternator before you install it' and it means what youre trying to say. saying 'check the fitment of the alternator before you install it.' means check the alternators fixed furnishings before you install it. simple is better.

Sounds like George Carlin's rant on extra words (about 30 seconds in):

This is where I see it...a lot. I'm very much into JDM stuff and I saw the word first from European dudes talking about wheel to wheel opening clearances. It has kind of taken on a new meaning vs it's original in that regard. Just about everybody uses it now, in that respect. I've yet to see it used when installing anything but wheels though.

Until Americans master the bait of Oxford commas, we will always appear to be wankers, plonkers, and tossers; totally lacking verve, elan, and panache.

i am a firm believer in the oxford comma, though i never knew i had verve, elan, and/or panache.

as to wankers, plonkers, and tossers, arenโ€™t they all a bunch of jerk-offs?

In the auto world fitment is a nuance describing not just physical fitting, but pulley, electrical connectors , etc are all correct.

Bolting in a part that physically fits is only the start.

Or using the word 'rims' when talking about wheels. Not the same thing.

And don't me started on apostrophes where they don't belong. haha

That's not a fitment, that's an example of poor judgement/stupidity/lack of common sense/a host of other things, put the name on it that suits you, instigated by some mechanically inept bozo and driven by a crowd of mindless fad followers.

Go ahead, ask me how I feel! I dare you! Razz

Right there with ya.

I sent these pics to all my buddies after asking them โ€œHow do you tell everyone that youโ€™re a fucking idiot without actually saying โ€œIโ€™m a fucking idiot.โ€?โ€
