I have a 1600 with dual 34 ict. I just adjusted the valves and the engine is running cherry. now all of a sudden, twice out of the ten times i have driven the car, about 5 seconds after shutoff (car is completly off) i hear a loud pop which sounds like backfire. any ideas. Ive called some local bug places and none of them have heard of this before. thanks.

sounds like the engine idle speed is high enough that raw fuel/air is entering the hot exhaust system and lighting up. Not really a backfire. Try reducing the idle speed to 700-800rpm, or lowest smooth idle.
