|
|
Hello everyone. I am working my way through some upgrades to my diesel van that has a 1.6TD swap. I purchased it last year and she has certainly been a hobby! I am in the process of swapping on a Giles pump. He sent me with the proper arm, however as you see from the pictures I am about an inch too short.
The first picture shows the stock pump, however the former owner "fabed up" a new arm which confuses me because since it is the NA pump shouldn't the accelerator cable reach?
I plan to replace the cable but can't figure out where to find one for an '83. everything on the net say '82 deisel only. 3945mm, 155.31"
Does any one know why the cable does not reach the stock arm?
Does anyone know what length I need. Or what I should do? I feel like maybe it is already a replacement and maybe not the correct cable.
The second pic is with the new pump. It appears as if the cable was an inch longer it would fit both pumps.
Any help would be a amazing. I am trying to learn as much as possible in a short time. The rabbit hole is deep and Its just time to get out and go camping.
Cheers my friends!

There is an adjustment that you can make at the accelerator pedal end of the cable that may get you the extra length that you need. It is under the van, and if I remember correctly you have to lower the tire clamshell to get to it. There is a little black cover that has a couple of screws holding it on and under there is the linkage and cable stop. Good luck. |

I found for my 83 diesel (with AAZ swap) that even using max adjustment up front below the accelerator pedal, I still needed to add something to the cable. I used a small piece of flat steel, drilled two holes in it, to bridge the gap you are showing in the photos. end of existing throttle cable through one hole, other connects to the injection pump.
Doesn't seem to give ideal pedal feel but gets the job done. |

Hello, looking at my copy of ETKA, they list another diesel accel cable 3980 mm long. Only note is LHD. Part number is 251 721 555s.
The one you listed at 3945 mm is the same part number with a "C" at the end. |

Not sure what happened in the Euro market, but here in North America VW moved the diesel Vanagon engine rearward about 2" in 1983 to accommodate the 5-speed transaxle, necessitating longer throttle and cold start cables (and a few other bits).
Looking at the throttle cables available in the UK, it seems a similar switch occurred there in 1982, resulting in a new cable about 35 mm (1.5") longer:
1981-1982, JK Part Number: J33474, OEM Part Number: 252-721-555/C, 4022mm
1982–1990, JK Part Number: J10233, OEM Part Number: 252-721-555/T 4057mm
http://www.justkampers.com/252-721-555-t-accelerat...-1990.html
Without removing and measuring your current cable it's hard to know what you have and what you need. And there's the additional question of whether the LH- and RH-drive models use different cables ...?
If you order something, let us know what you find, for posterity! |

Anyone already get this figured out? Restore almost done (before and after pic below) but my original throttle cable is also too short to reach my new Giles performance pump. Can I just fabricate a longer arm or do I need to replace the cable or rework the linkage? Is there a loss of throttle response if I fabricate a longer arm?
