hello is it better to bring a really old topic up from the dead or make a new thread if its about the same thing?
some forums dont like old topics being dragged up |

I see no problem reviving old threads if the subject is the same.
It is worse to have multiple threads on the same subject, making it harder to find a response later. |

If your new question is on the same subject and you want to add to it then Yes, it's ok.
It sort of depends how old.
1 year? No big deal
5 years or more? Maybe.
The top 2 things I can think of that we will remove if someone bumps an old topic are:
Posts such as:
* "This is good info" or "This worked for me" (Glad you liked it but this adds nothing)
* People who post messages like "Is this for sale" instead of contacting the person who posted directly. There is no guarantee the person they are asking will ever see their reply and often the person hasn't even visited the site for years. _________________ How to Post Photos

it's better to start a new one as some people start replying to previous question in the old thread that are years old and the people are long gone

That's a different problem. Maybe there should be a forum rule to 'read the post date before replying'
I think adding to an existing thread is better than asking the same question again in a new thread. And it helps avoid the '...do a search...' answers. _________________ Andy

thats a good point i didnt include. yea im not talking about repeating an already existing thread if the informations there then whats the point, but sometimes when ive searched something and theres only one thread and it seems to peter out without getting an answer.. im thinking do i drag it up with an "did op get it solved etc" or just start a new thread
but ill try follow Everetts guidance. |

This made me think of something else.
If it's a short thread without much information, it may be better to start a new one.
If it's a longer thread, especially with multiple pages of information, I would lean towards posting there.
I know when I do a search for existing information on a topic, I often check out the longer threads first. _________________ How to Post Photos

Yes, I think that's the gist of it. Think about what makes the most sense for a future Sambanista who is using Search to find info. If you are adding additional information to an information-rich topic, it makes sense to append yours, no matter how old the topic is. |
