I thought there was a complete vw list here somewhere but couldn’t find it
It looks like a 1600 upright but not sure?

It is possibly a Volkswagen replacement engine. https://www.aircooled.net/vw-engine-codes/ _________________ "The holy land is everywhere." ~ Black Elk

Bus was made in 6/74 for the Australian market. From the list Mark linked, the AS code is 1974. Looks like it was an upright 1600 engine. If you want to know if it is the original engine, search birth certificate. You can pay to have the serial number researched, along with the engine number, and they will give you info on the bus and confirm if that is the original engine number. They will not give you the original engine number, just a yes that is it or no it is not. _________________ "Most people don't know what they're doing, and a lot of them are really good at it." - George Carlin |

Thanks all!
That would be amazing if it is matching and there’s a good chance it should be!
Fingers crossed,
Would be the first time in all the 10 plus Vw’s I’ve owned. |

I am reviving this older thread because have somewhat the same question.
I searched the response from Busdaddy in the archives and not sure how i'm reading it.
My engine s/n is: B5077047. My bus is a 6/70 manufacture date.
My understanding is by reading the list, it is show a 8/1/68 5050174 to 12/1/68 5079928. Am I reading this correctly?
Also, if the engine was manufactured at that time, it is probably not original ,right
Thanks _________________ Rick

You mention the manufacture date of your bus. Only on buses produced for the USA and Canada the manufacture date is mentioned on the vehicle itself: on the vehicle safety certificate sticker in the door jam on the drivers side. So I presume your bus has US or Canadian specifications.
This means it came with M157: Exhaust emission control system.
1970-buses for the USA and Canada have a 1600cc single port engine. If such an engines was made with M157 then the engine codes starts with "B5" for the 1968, 1969 and 1970 model years.
You are right that engine code B5 077 047 appears to be from december 1968. So the engine type (1600cc single port engine with M157) is original for your bus, but the number shows this one is from an earlier date.
My guess is that the original enginenr for your bus is around B5 200 000. _________________ currently starring in my fleet:

Thanks, I didn’t think my engine was original. The engine I have is a duel port. I was just wondering what I had and when it was built _________________ Rick

no way of knowing unless you ask the guy who put it together with a mix of parts. The case number is a single port and not a dual port. _________________ "Most people don't know what they're doing, and a lot of them are really good at it." - George Carlin |
