Funny, I remember checking that book out at the library when at 16, in 1971, I bought my first bug, a 1966.

Good luck with the project! The Squareback turned out cool so I’m interested to see where this goes. What are the plans?

Thanks for the props on the squareback! Wink
My original plan for this was an old 70s style bugeye baja but after evaluating the front end I'm not sure I wanna cut it off, it's not great but still in solid shape.
Since the back has already been cut up I an leaning towards some late model fenders for the front and trim them for clearance.
That way I can retain the hood and apron.
I've seen a few that have done it and it is kinda growing on me.

But still up in the air, I got time and Im in no hurry.

Here’s a Baja I built quite a while back. It’s a late model, so it’s got the blunt hood. I was able to raise the floor of the front apron up for added ground clearance. Mounted the upper bumper mounts to the stock bumper mounting pads. Cut fenders front and rear. After having fiberglass fronts before, I’d never go back!

Thanks for the pic.
Yeah I think this would be the path of least resistance for this project.

Another photo dump.
Got a pair of seats with solid slide rails at the classic for 40.00 bucks.
The dash grill also came with the deal so really even cheaper, always bundle at the swap meet.
I just needed to cut off the railroad track this guy welded to them, knocked off about 25 lbs per seat . . LOL

My pics will be a little out of order until I catch up with this thread, I had already did a shit load of work on it before I decided to post on it.

Seat covers should show up today.
Spacers are for the drivers side only, I ain't a very tall guy so an extra inch made a big difference.

Trans is all secure again. Replaced the nose cone and a miss drilled hockey stick, fixed the rotten axle boot and topped it off with gear oil.

Took it for a spin around the neighborhood, put in a solid 1600 I have on hand to get it rolling.
I did fix the the brakes before I took it out. New braided lines and some old shoes and wheel cylinders in the spare parts bin.

Other than the crappy shocks over inflated tires it went pretty good, trans is still in great shape as far as I can tell. No loud noises and smooth as butter.

Now I can push full speed ahead, my biggest concern was if the trans was good or not.

Like that janky oil filter mount?? LOL

More pic dumps.
Found this really cool old school header. Just what this car needed.
Made a few different tips for it but being old and deaf I decided the muffler is my best option.
Im quite happy with it.

More improvements to the exhaust.
I really wanted to keep as much stock tin on as possible and these J-tubes fit the bill.
Picked them up at a swap meet a while back. I like how they curve down away from the head and also have tabs for the sled tins.
Welded on some flanges to finish it up.
