I have a 1995 Rialta with a 1995 Eurovan manual 5-speed in it. I don’t have to push down on the shifter to put it in reverse. I am wondering if I put the shifter pivot on upside down. I saw an example in this position online. Here is a picture of it. The arm on the right goes to the transmission.

Looks OK to me.

Maybe check that your engine mounts aren't sagging. Or the pivot for the linkage on the gearbox.

If you got the plastic stop on correctly then your problem is/was the adjustment in the shifter where the clamp holds the rod to the bottom of the shifter. VW made a tool to adjust this. it is pretty tough to get it correct unless you have the tool (no longer available) or clamp the shifter in place while in first gear as you tighten the clamp. The tool held the shifter in the correct place while the clamp was set. It only takes a very small rotation of the shifter rod to change the shifter and it is nearly impossible, I found, to tighten the clamp and not have the joint shift unless you clamp the shifter in place.

Bentley says the gap between the shifter stop and the housing should be .08" or 2mm. The gap of .08" is measured with the shifter at rest and in first gear, no clamp.

After doing this the first time mine was still set too close to the stop so I increased the gap to .12" while clamped and readjusted it. Now it slides into 1st smoothly.

Need to figure out your parts? Here's the best site I've found. Click on a part number and it highlights and goes to the info or click on the info and it highlights the part on the diagram.
