Guys,
I’m considering trying to start an in home zinc plating process. Just wondering if anyone here has experience doing that?

Home plating has been done by Samba members; a quick search found these (cad/zinc):

Well, small parts. Nuts, bolts, washers. I work as a volunteer at the San Diego air and space museum. We restore old aircraft engines for display.

Bill or Tim could probably give you some good advice.

i use baking soda, vinegar, and water for my electrolytic solution. you can grab a decent piece of zinc bar for the annode. for really small parts that fit in your hand use a glass jar, and just hook the two end of the power leads to the zinc and the wire running to and suspending your part youre trying to plate. we plate with a lot of different metals, and some of the solutions are fairly nasty. especially the solution for precious metals like silver and gold cyanide acid! but yes the simplicity of zinc makes it easy to deal with. i woudl play around with that first and then you can see what type of amplifier rectifier to get for larger pieces and better results, dont try to plate too fast or youll get crystals.

heck ive even taken small parts from the blast cabinet, after glass bead, and used a aa battery and a cup to plate them takes less than 3 minutes.

If silver colored hookers start showing up in Arizona and California. We know where to look Wink

I've tried a few times, not just over the moon about my results but it really could just be user error.

http://www.southsandia.com/forum/website/zincplating.html has the recipe for doing it. I did find that higher voltage or current tended to produce a much grainier and non uniform job, so slow and low with multiple dips gave the best results. No idea about longevity but I wouldn't put it up against a commercial plating.

If you do a lot of plating you want the current control automatic , but you do can do the small odd job by hand

Your issue was due to “shading”. The plating only occurs from a direct line of sight from your anode.

I dropped multiple anodes in & rotated the parts occasionally while dipped. I would remove the parts, buff them with a brass bristled brush, & dip them again.

Well, I have gotten completely sidetracked trying to source all of the supplies necessary to do this. Bins, digital scale, vinegar, Karo syrup, salt… it’s more like I was trying to make pickles or brine a Turkey instead of trying to plate metal parts. Shocked

I also got muriatic acid & some drain crystals to clean & etch the parts, the only thing that I’m missing is the zinc anodes. I tried the usual suspects, hardware store for zinc flashing, nope. I even went to a local boat store, but since most of the nearby bodies of water are fresh, they only stocked magnesium anodes.

So I tossed a few pennies into the blast cabinet & blew the copper coating off.

And tossed them into the brine to get a bit of zinc into solution until the anodes show up.

With all of the charging adapters that are laying around, I figured that I could scrounge a power supply somewhere without too much hassle… huh, that cheap digital scale just came with one.

i had a set up with a motorized hanger system that woudl rotate and rock the parts while they are int eh solution. the obvious advice i give to new platers is to make sure your parts are totally clean and that youre going slow and long not fast and hot, unless its with a silver plated bond model, then by all means....
