I'm not knowledgeable or experienced, but I did at least do a search before asking, so....
I read a previous post from someone who installed a rebuilt transaxle and found he had one forward and four reverse gears. It wa a Beetle unit. He was advised by several members that his transaxle could be disassembled and the ring gear rotated/reversed/swapped around, whatever way you chose to say it, and that it would then reverse the outputs. My question is, is this true for all VW transaxles? Are all of them reversible like this, simply by changing around the diff gearing, or just certain models? |

All swingaxle transmissions with two side covers can have the ring gear on either side. Some IRS transmissions have only one removable side cover, but those wouldn't work with reduction boxes anyway. _________________ .

Thanks, Lind. Just the information I needed. Since I'm new to these transaxles, maybe I could push it one step further and ask the membership for a bit of advice: Are there any specific models of transaxle that have a reputation for particular strength/durability? And lastly, anyone have any suppliers they'd be comfortable recommending? I've seen the name AA in a couple of threads, but I'm in eastern Canada, so they're a bit over the horizon for me. I know I'm not likely to find a place on my side of the razorwire, so I'm going to take a kicking on shipping as it is. |
