Hello
1969 1600 single port . 009 dizzy. Good engine tins and engine seal. Engine runs great when cool.
Here is what happens after about 30min highway speed 60mph its sputters then dies completely and does not start back up. After it cools back down it starts and run until hot again. I thought it was vapor lock but ruled that out. I changed coil and thats not it. I was thinking maybe the condenser but I have never had one fail before so I don't know the symptoms. The las time it happened I poured water at the base of the dizzy and cooled it down and it started back up and ran until hot.
Can someone tell me the proper dizzy for this engine and I will change to vac advance if I can find one.
Thanks |

There are others that will jump in here soon, but my thoughts....
1. The correct distributor is a stock rebuilt Solex with vacuum advance. Suggest you contact Volkzbitz on these forums. He can provide you a wonderfully restored and correct distributor for your engine.
2. How hot are your engine temps?
3. Maybe the fuel pump getting hot/tired and failing? If so, Sparxworks (sp?)- Bill - is your source for restored original fuel pumps.
Good luck! _________________ Larry in OB

What happens if you unscrew the gas cap when it starts to sputter?
Have you checked the gap of your ignition points. |

i had a bug that did the same thing , felt like it ran out a gas . poured some gas down the carb and it would start back up . turned out it was my fuel pump , the pump rod kinda wore a hole thru the pump lever , it would run cold but not when it warmed up . it was one of the cheap non re buildable pumps .... im running square tops now . |

Until you learn the difference in how the different failures feel, replace the condenser when you replace the points.
Napa house brand Echlin makes the best right now, though Bosch condensers have been better than the 2010’s garbage in the last few years. Echlin points cost twice as much, but last five times as long.

are there any other variables like the area it dies is hill or grade relational rather than just heat.
The fuel pump should never get so hot that you need water to cool it. Is your overall engine running too hot? _________________ "Most people don't know what they're doing, and a lot of them are really good at it." - George Carlin |

No hills or anything like that. Flat ground. I didn't pour water on the fuel pump I put it on the base of the distributor. |

That’s why I suggested the fuel pump trick video. Cooling the case releases the pump pushrod if it’s stuck.
If the bus has a history of making long drives without issues, it’s probably something else. But if this is a new problem, I bet that’s the issue.
If the engine has been fine before, I would also test the ignition switch by jumping the battery + to coil + on long drives.

Update
I have taken the bus on some short trips and it seems that something I change out might have been the problem. I changed the coil the points and condenser, carb. I did not touch the fuel pump because I didn't think that to be the problem. I believe that it was the points and condenser. |

I too have had similar symptoms and other similar variations of issues in my '70 Westy. 9 times out of 10 it was something with the points/condensor.
A troubleshooting tip I learned from folks here on the samba is to change one thing at a time rather than 3 or 4 things at a time. This way it is easier to diagnose and narrow down the real problem. Exception for me is the points & condensor because I always replace those together at the same time.
Glad your engine is running better now. Enjoy it! _________________ '70 Westy
