I am ready to redo my interior and wanted to know if anyone had great pictures of what can be done.
1. Im tired of the the cardboard panels. I dont know what i want but I would like a higher quaility.
2. The interior cloth is worn out? what are good replacements?
How much should it cost to redo the interior?
thanks guys! _________________ 91 Syncro

We are in the process of building out our TinTop into a camper. If you want to build anew from the ground up it can get pricey. A new interior from sew fine including new panels and seat covers, is about $1500 A new cabinet system from a custom shop is about $2600 - $3000 and then pile on for appliances and such.
I will have pics up in a couple of weeks of our build, and that may give you some ideas of what you can do. _________________ SyncroBo - 1987 VW Syncro Expedition Camper

To the OP: are you redoing a camper or passenger van? Either way, don't skimp on materials or you'll kick yourself later when it starts looking like crap. Consider what the material will look like after being blasted with sunlight for most of the day. And find some robust materials, something that is at least as durable as what VW put in the Westies (except for the Weekender corduroy).
Then consider all the little storage possibilities you can build in like door and wall panels. And whenever I add an interior mod to the Westy I like to consider having a secondary purpose. An exampe is the raised decklid for the 1.8T doubles as tool storage, or the rear facing jump seat bracket includes HD anchors for strapping down large items (I can also fit 'square-bodied' jugs of water behind the seat perfectly - but that wasn't planned), or additional interior lighting that operates on the sliding door pin and a dash mounted switch. When I added a refrigerator door to the back cabinet, I also added storage nets to the inside of the door for small items. You get the picture.
While not a Vanagon, check out the Sprinters at OutsideVans. They've got some amazing ideas and beautiful campers. If I ever leave the Vanagon world, it'll be for a Dogma or Transformer...but I digress.
Anyway, give us an idea of what you're working on and what you're trying to accomplish and you might get a few more responses. _________________ '85 Westy |

Pick up a book on how to do auto interiors
http://www.barnesandnoble.com/w/custom-auto-interiors-don-taylor/1102587332?ean=9781931128186
Using this book I was able to redo my panels very nicely. Here is the slider panel with a fairly simple design. It was done after dinner one night and looks great. The original backing board was used after pulling off the stock vinyl. The sculpting foam comes in different thickness and the designs are only limited as to how fancy you want to get.

sick foam bro!
I saw a thread with aluminum panels/framing for all the westy cabinets. If I were to do a redo, that would be my top priority- to reduce weight. _________________ 82 Diesel Westy

Broken record here.. but check out what is done in yacht interiors.
(several books are available)
Lots of really nice materials to be had... some are very easy to work with.. And prices range from exotic to reasonably affordable. _________________ -89 GL Westy, SVX.. finally.

Check the classifieds here, someone's selling ABS door panels, you can use them as-is or cover to your taste.
I've gotten several high-quality leather hides on Ebay to play with in my other cars, hundreds of colors and patterns available... I used it to cover dashboards, various trim pieces, and made new e-brake handle covers, but you need a pretty heavy-duty sewing machine and leather needle to stitch it well.
Check out http://sewfineproducts.com/catalogs-van.htm for great pre-made panels and upholstery. |
This is by far the most amazing interior finishes I have ever seen! Each time I look I see something new. Your attention to detail, the layout and each material chosen is just perfect! Thank you so much for sharing! My lord. _________________ 91 Syncro

Dang, my man, nice work!!!!!!!!! Is that a sprayed top coat or is it a vinyl cover? If it is a covering, did you use a vacuum bag to apply it?

Yes, this is one of the top interiors you'll see anywhere.
On a possible down side, the weight of these custom cabinets, (IMHO) may well be what is causing such horrendous mechanical failures to Nacho as she lurches from breakdown to breakdown thru South America. I follow Drive Nacho Drive almost daily, and am really rooting for Brad and Sheena, but I hope the extra weight of the impressive customization will not hold them back.
Go Nacho, Go!

I would imagine a van with an interior such as this one isnt still pushing the 2.1. If it is, well maybe a point is made. But I have to tell you, I want to break down in that thing everywhere for awhile.

I might as well toss this image from my Brother's custom interior.
comes with furnace, mini-micro and a modified RV oven (shrunk to 2 burners, but deeper inside for a 9x13 lasagna pan) built from 3/4" oak plywood
as for weight.. I'm not on that bandwagon, these VWs were made to carry weight.. and well we do skip the H2o tank
