Even though there seem to be a ton of pictures of both ATE and Girling calipers out on the interweb, I still can't seem to figure out which I have.
I guess they look like ATE but someone else just told me he thought they were Girling as I was about to order new ones. Can't seem to find a thread here that helps me either.
Can anyone tell from these photos?

You can see the outline of the ATE logo

My gut was right then. I'm glad at least ONE of us can see the outline of that logo!

If you're buying new ones, it doesn't matter, it's just a question of fixed calipers vs floating calipers.
ATE and Girling produced both styles for the Vanagon.
Just be careful to not buy Bay Window bus calipers sold for the Vanagon, they're wrong as these have the inlet port on the back of the piston.
Also some barely fit even under the stock 14" steel wheel, I had the case recently on a caliper from CIP1.com, I was pissed, was catching on the wheel welds a bit. _________________ Silicone Steering Boots and 930 Cv boots for sale in the classifieds.

My '84 West (March '84 manufacture date) came with the earlier bus ATE calipers, with the port in the center behind the piston. Can't tell from these pics if this '84 has the bus calipers or the later style. I believe you would need to replace the hard line from hose to caliper if you replaced the early calipers with the later style. So you should confirm where the hard pipe attaches to the caliper before ordering new ones. When you look up calipers for an '84, most places list only the later style. JBugs is one of the few places I've found that sells the center-port caliper. They list them as fitting 1973-79 Bus and 1980-85 Vanagon. _________________ 1984 Westfalia with Bostig Zetec |

That's what I'm saying, this is wrong.
Any van with these center port calipers has been retrofitted, that's not from the factory, likely when the Vanagon calipers where NLA new not that long ago, but there were plenty BW bus calipers still, likely bc of the Brazilian production. _________________ Silicone Steering Boots and 930 Cv boots for sale in the classifieds.
