Help... New to the forum. Im a 49 year old STOKED Vanagon owner again for the 4 time. Just purchased a 1990 Carat. Been looking on Samba for 2 years for the right van and I now have it in my driveway!! Happy Man.

I can't live with the stock steering wheel. I've replaced it on all my vans over the years. Now, I can't seem to locate ANY adapters or install kits. Can someone PLEASE share some advice here?

Scroll down to the Steering Section (48 ) in this thread. Some info there may help.

i used a late 80's early 90's wheel, pre air bag. fits fine with only minor mod,i used a cone shaped stone on my drill to taper where shaft goes into wheel, takes several tries but you will be happy with results!! cabriolets seem to be best, and can be found in leather!

Ok Van Fans... Riddle me this...

Went to the local VW dealership today and had them check the difference between a 1988 and 1990 steering shaft. It's the same part #.

So, if Grant makes an adapter for a 1988 GL why wouldn't it work with a 1990?

My guess is the Turn indicator shut off may be in op or maybe the horn, but if the steering shaft is the same part # I am assuming the grant 3568 install adaptor will work.

Geez... What a pain.

Thanks for input.

FYI... Grant adapter 3568 works perfect with post 1988 Vanagons.

This is a "stock" non power steering wheel.

It fits right on. The grip could be anything. Doesn't need to be fake wood. You could put leather right over it. Could you live with this? No installation problem because it's a Vanagon wheel. It fits right on with on adapter needed. The hub could be anything you want and the spokes can be puffed up too and leathered if you want.
