Presenting to you... and posting here for my records... my new to me 66 beetle.
Finally got it home and checked out.
Has already been 12v converted, including starter and wiper motor... looks like may have 6v supply for the original radio... that doesn't seem to work... but this is day 1 so we will see.
I usually do offroad builds, but this car is so clean I just can't do a baja conversion.
Unfortunately, the 1300cc engine is gone... however it has a mystery engine built from a 40 horse.
Which was rather disappointing... didn't expect the original engine to be intact... but had sure hoped for a later model engine vs an earlier model... oh well....

Carburetor is a 30 pict...
Does run great, sat up for approximately 5 years until today... found the points were messed up, being the little piece that rides on the dizzy shaft had come off so they weren't opening... replaced and it fired right up using a temporary fuel supply.

Only rot through I have found on the pans is right under the battery.
Heater channels look amazing.
Should be an easy build... compared to my previous ones.

Only other thing I have noticed is that it has 3 different stock wheels, a smoothy, a slotted and two... I'm unfamiliar with.

Vw parts are very hard to come by in my region but hopefully I can dig up 4 matches.

Oh and it did come with the fenders and bumper.
Which are in decent overall shape.

Otherwise, I'll be going through it when I have time and posting updates. Not sure what my goals are yet but excited to have a type 1 with a body!

Wheels are supposed to be the '66- '67 slotted style.

I have three ex- 1966 "F" motors, one a runner, one stuck and one clean short block. I like 1300s. I think the Europeans had the right idea. They stayed with the 1300 for another decade.

I actually have a F case. It is a dual relief replacement case but am planning to use it for this car.... at the moment.
It's disassembled and ready for machining... not sure what I'll build for it yet... but do want to stay single port with a stock vw carburetor.
Maybe a SP 1600...

Spent some time today cleaning it out and removing the tarboards, also the fabric on the heater channels.
Cleaned everything up with a scraper and cup brush on a drill so I could have a good look at the pans and channels.
Put the pedal assembly back in as previous owner had removed it and replaced few parts, clutch cable Is always great fun... took a few tries without a helper.
Does go into 1st and reverse... seems promising.
Next step here will be to clean the fuel tank and hard lines... so I can move the car under it's own power. Cool

Found the August '65 owners manual... actually it was called something else but can't remember.... and a service booklet in there as well. Not in prestine condition but definitely legible.

You can't go wrong with a good running single port.

The only minor snivel about a '66 1300 is the small clutch. Next one I build is getting a 200mm flywheel.

Took some time yesterday to clean out the fuel tank and both metal lines and replace all the rubber lines, installed a filter under the tank itself.
The tank took little effort, has about 3/4 tank full of old fuel.
For the lines, all I know to do is to spray brake parts cleaner in them and then blow out until i have clean fluid coming out.
A clean tank is a happy tank Very Happy

Ofcourse that allowed for a neighborhood test drive.
As of now we have one emergency brake that's functional and definitely need transmission mounts. Boo hoo!

Played around with the fuel sender cable, it works but a little stiff.
Apparently we cannot buy just a cable... Does anyone know if you can?

Also wondering if these were common or more of some type of accessory?

They go along the door sill and front door corner as well as the a pillar.

That's it for now.... next will most likely be to pull the engine and transmission out to inspect and deal with leaks... you know all the fun stuff.

Washed up and waiting.

Nice project.
Regarding the gas gauge. I had similar issue. A well needed careful cleaning and some time consuming straightening of the cable by feeling for kinks and gentle bending solved it. Then lubricating cable and sender. After calibration it now works as it should.
Here’s my 66.

I will see if I can get the same results using that method.
Clean ride btw!!

Not much done today...
Did move the car around and set the rear up on jack stands.
Managed to pull the engine out.

Next, transmission has to come out so I can de rust the sheet metal in that area.
Then deal with transmission and rear brakes.

Anyone know if rear drums can be resurfaced?
I know I can remove the front wheel bearings and have those done but the spline hole on the rears is rather small....

Last set of swing axle replacement rotors I purchased, last year for my blue buggy, don't seem to be decent quality... don't really know where to source them if needed... any suggestions here?

Any shop that has an old school brake lathe can do your drums... as long as they're not too thin already. It used to be SOP to cut the drums, so much SOP that most mechanics knew when they were too thin.

Now it's just SOP to replace 'em. I'm doin' brakes today, new pads, new rotors.

I probably have at least one set of very good OG '66 drums still on transaxle from the last (rusty!) '66 I parted. The car had fresh brakes before they parked it. You could get OG drums back then.

They're not difficult to find even though they're '66- '67 only. Same deal, any old timer with a brake lathe can take a light cut off 'em if they need it.

Come to think of it I'm an old timer. Maybe it's about time I get a brake lathe...

And a valve grinder. Idea

If they are within spec they can be turned. We have parts stores here who still turn drums.

Thanks for the input on the rear drums being turned... I'll attempt to have them done and see how it goes. Hopefully they don't get messed up.

Pulled the transaxle out this evening.
Started cleaning up the underside side of the package tray and chassis in that area.
Also scraped on the Trans housing trying to get all the goop off.
My trans was painted... idk if I'll repaint or not... used to them just being a natural finish.
Probably gonna have axle tubes, housings and backing plates powder coated.

If you ever get up around Memphis I'd be glad to check and/or turn your rear drums for you. I bought a couple brake lathes and found the specific tooling to turn the rear drums

O'reillys usually has a location with a brake lathe but it's probably a toss up if they have the adapters or even know how to turn drums. The VW rear drum tooling is also used on a newer front wheel drive Ford car, but I can't remember which car it is. Might be a Focus-?

I don't come that far but usps does Cool
I know oreillys has the machine but I'm not sure about them being able to do it.
I actually used to be a dealership mechanic for Nissan and believe me, brake jobs are the name of the game up there.
But we used a machine that only turned rotors while they were still mounted on the vehicle.
We had a standard machine on the kia side that I used for drums but the shaft was much too large for vw drums.
However I will poke around some of the shops and see if anyone will take them in.
No vw shops or stores around here ... the shipping costs of rebuilding an engine for me are outrageous.
But I still do it when I can. Everything has got to be balanced in my opinion.

Find a good place to do the drums. If you have to buy new ones do lots of research first. I've heard they sometimes come in not round. You can have the new ones turned but sometimes there is not enough. This is input from reading other users threads on TheSamba about aftermarket drums.

I hate to say ship em to me sight unseen, because if they’re too worn to safely turn you’d be out the shipping cost for two heavy paper weights!
But if you want to, I am more than happy to work on them. Hopefully you can find a local place. I seem to recall it being about $35 for O’Reilly’s to turn a drum or disc
