Hello folks
I couldn’t resist picking up this model kit I saw at the store the other day, and I’d like to try and paint it (exterior and interior) as accurately as possible. Over on the paint color page often referenced here, being the VW newbie that I am, I’m not 100% sure which year and specific bus model this kit represents. The papers included with the kit don’t list specifics.
Any help would be appreciated! Thank you!
Maury

Welcome!
From that angle it's a 73-79 version, if it has an external gas cap (not behind a door) it's 74-79, can't get much more specific than that without a look at the engine and some tiny interior features.
It looks most like a base model Kombi, they were painted beige inside until mid 1978, after that they were body color inside. The chrome hub caps and white walls are a bit odd, but many owners upgraded so it's not really wrong.
Have a look at brochures for commercial models here: https://www.thesamba.com/vw/archives/lit/type2_2.php _________________ Rust NEVER sleeps and stock never goes out of style.

Howdy ... and welcome X2
Be sure & wash parts to be painted in mild dishwashing soap, rinse well, & dry thoroughly.
They have a release agent that will cause the paint to NOT STICK.
Light mist coats are your friend also as you will loose detail if the paint is heavy.
I've done many models in the past & learned the hard way.
Looks like fun ... enjoy ... stay safe

Thanks for the info!
I’ll go through those brochures. One thing is, I think, the top and body should remain the same color, correct? I see some photos of the white roof, but I *think* that’s for a different VW bus??? |

The front and wheels tell me '73 or newer but there are no side marker lights or reflectors so that is pre '68 which would be split windshield. _________________ Our cars get old, we get old but driving an old VW never gets old! |

Side markers and reflectors were only on versions shipped to some markets, most of Europe didn't have any, same for engine sizes.
Two tone paint was only on deluxe passenger models, there's also a bunch of chrome trim and a whole ton of interior finishing that went along with the paint. Some later Europe delivered campers were also available two tone.
The Kombi is the plain Jane work truck, like a bare bones panel van but with windows. Seats were optional for the rear cargo area, the interior was painted metal with no headliner unless you sprung for the optional painted hardboard lining. _________________ Rust NEVER sleeps and stock never goes out of style.

Thanks for all the great info. Sounds like I need to be looking at the very bottom list of 73-75 colors on this page (also referencing the various brochures):
https://www.thesamba.com/vw/archives/info/colorstype2.php
Maaaaan, the Orient Blue and Reef Blue are speaking to me! Now, to match the paints to available model colors... |

Those lists cover all models, but you could order even the lowliest version in any color you wanted if you were prepared to pay and wait, if you wanted it cheap and fast then you had to settle for one of these:

Gotcha, thanks. I’m assuming this model kit is going for the Brilliant Orange finish. It’s also wants the interior light grey. _________________ I roast coffee: Grounded Roasterie |

There are color charts right here for you to look at. Just look in the technical section _________________ If you`re going to do something, do it right. |

Dad's '69 Bus was a deluxe in single color brilliant blue, had all the extra chrome bits, complete headliner in white and grey seats. Interesting how they were outfitted differently for different markets. I didn't know that. We were given 3 exterior color choices back then red, white or blue. My folks chose blue. There was no interior color choice.

I struggled to understand them fully. On the Type 2 Color Combinations page, down at the bottome under Type 2 Paint Code Listing, the color I'm working with is "Brilliant Orange" from 73-79 or "Reef Blue" from 76-79. I haven't been able to find the specific upholstery color options for those colors/years (outsdie the brochure busdaddy posted. I'm still digging, though, and I appreciate evrryone's patience and help! _________________ I roast coffee: Grounded Roasterie |

Upholstery options got pretty lame in the later production years, Canyon brown was very common, or black. There may have been a few more on European deluxe models, but North America didn't get much choice.
