That makes a lot of sense. I just looked at pics of the 917 Targa and all my interior matches that.
How can you explain the 6 digit VIN and the fact that would be a 60's 912 ? |

Your car likely has a donor from clip from a '66 912. As was common when 912s were a dime a dozen. Under the lower dash knee pad will be a production number that will likely match the rest of the car. If it matches the VIN up front, then most likely someone spent a great deal of time and money trying to make it look like it was a newer car. Gauges are from '68-on. Knobs look like '68 as do the wing window opener. Operable wings ended in '68. Door panels are after '68. |

If your Tital is 66 just make it a 66. Someone might have done that for smog reasons (to make exempt) but it will never be worthless because it's a Porsche. It will never be concourse but a driver will fetch$25K easy. |

A couple questions.
Does the car still have the original aluminum VIN plate in the front?
Does the door VIN tag show the 456458?
I have seen more than one coupe transformed into a Targa so that isn't completely unusual.
Leaving the original VIN probably wasn't an issue. If it is titled as a '66 912 it might have had a lower insurance rate than a '71 911.
As for value, it is a dicey car to restore. |

Yeah, like others have already said, likely a 912 grafted nose to a wrecked 1971 911 targa that probably had a FUBAR VIN.
As it sits, if it was me, I would probably be fixing it as a "real Karmann Coupe".
It isn't an easy decision. The VIN isn't a 911, it isn't a targa and it isn't a 1971. It's a combo of many of that, as it sits now.
Maybe going for a "912" with a 6 cylinder 911 engine with a ton of bodybuilding due to converting from targa to coupé will be worthwhile.
Dicey indeed. |

1966 had the short wheel base.
This car is clearly long wheel base, 1969 and newer.
The screwy serial numbers wouldn't prevent me from fixing the car up and enjoying it. 911 drivetrains are getting pricey though. |

I'd stay away from spending a ton of dough on it since it is very obvious it is not a 66 swb coupe (and there is no such thing as a 66 targa). Any future buyer will point that out and question why the vin was changed. The 71 targa could have been a stolen car with a vin swapped out
Not saying it is worthless, just worth a lot less than a car without this story. And i do mean a lot, as in 50%. |
