Where was my Beetle originally sold from?

Is there any way to find the original dealer who sold my 1966 Beetle? I got the birth certificate, but it only tells me that it was delivered in Chicago. I can't use the lookup sites because they want a 17 digit VIN. Thanks for any help!

So if it came into Chicago would it have then been delivered to a Chicago dealership or could it have been shipped somewhere else?

It could have stayed in Chicago, or it could have gone somewhere else. The distributor was Import Motors of Chicago which supplied cars to dealerships in Illinois, Iowa, Minnesota, both Dakotas, and Wisconsin. This is why it'd be extremely helpful if you had some sort of documents or leads on former owners that could give you a clue where it came from, otherwise it's a guessing game.

My car came from Brown Motors National City, I know because I bought it new. Also have temporary registration, from dealer, contract, and other paper work.
