Steering Box Fill Plugs

I noticed some leakage on my steering box, so I wanted to put some grease in. The plastic plugs started falling apart when I tried to take them out, so I just quit as I didn't want the plastic falling in the box. Is there a trick to getting them out? I can't take the top of the box off as there isn't really clearance to get a tool on all the bolts.

had a similar situation . i think there vented like with a hole in the center , i put a screw in the center hole and it pulled out , 1970 bug .

I just discovered the other day that the plugs you get when you buy a new master cylinder(mine are yellow and they were used to seal the threaded holes) seem to be a perfect fit for the steering box plug holes.
