Hey y’all, so I currently own a ‘68 bug with a motor from a ‘73. I’m not sure if the previous owner also swapped the transmission to a ‘73 or if it’s still the stock ‘68 transmission. But my question is when I go to replace the clutch do I order the clutch for a ‘73 or a ‘68 because I’m unsure what transmission is in the car. I apologize for my ignorance, but I know you guys have a lot of experience with these cars and it’s better safe than sorry. Thank you!! _________________ I’m just happy to be here.

I'll help. The stock 1968 transmission would be a swing axle transmission, and the 1973 transmission would be an IRS one.
But it is possible to swap swing axles onto a transmission that was originally IRS, but rare and not so straightforward.

The transmissions 1970 and older use a pressure plate WITH a center ring; the pressure plate itself can be a 3-arm or diaphragm type, doesn't matter. The 1971 and newer VW transmissions use a pressure plate WITHOUT a center ring, can also be a 3-arm or a diaphragm type.

You should always change pressure plate, clutch, & throw out bearing every time. Disc is the same. _________________ 1967 VW Fastback (Past)

1967 1500cc clutch DISCS through to the latest bugs all used same 200mm clutch DISCS. These discs can be either spring-type or solid type.
The clutch release bearings are specific to the "up to 1970" and "1971 and later". _________________ 1970 VW (owned since 1972) and 1971 VW Convertible (owned since 1976), second owner of each. I happen to have some clutch disc in the classifieds just for you.
I prefer the solid rigid over the spring style. I have had the springs fall out and the power is transferred via 3 rivets. Look close at them as the rigid and see all of the rivets.

Then on the pressure plate, if you want a good one that works well the 9 spring type is solid, just as Cusser how solid they are.

Here’s what I would do if you don't know for certain what type of clutch you have inside the bellhousing…
Order the clutch + pressure plate + TO bearing for your ‘68 Beetle. This will include:
200mm clutch disc which can be used on any manual transmission from ‘67~’78.
200mm pressure plate with centering ring/disc. This PP will work with ‘67~’71 TO bearings. If you remove the centering ring (held in by a ring clip) the PP will now be compatible with ‘71-later TO bearings.
The TO bearing for the ‘68 will only work for ‘67~’71 transmissions.
Additionally, order the ‘71-later TO bearing. When done, return the TO bearing you don’t use
Using these 4 parts you can replace the clutch assembly on all Beetles from ‘67~’78, and possibly even the later Mexi Beetles too.
Just make sure the PP has a removable centering ring (all new ones will), and you can return the unused TO bearing to the parts store for a refund.
The transmission will determine which TO bearing you need to use. No sleeve around the transmission input shaft means you must use the earlier TO bearing. A sleeve means the later type.
The TO bearing installed will dictate whether you must keep the centering ring on the PP plate (early type TO bearing), or remove it (later type TO bearing).
The 200mm PP plate + clutch disc is compatible with all 200mm flywheels used from ‘67-later. _________________ AshMan40

^^ That! ^^
And DON'T put used parts in there-- good quality new is the way to go. Putting used clutch parts in are like installing used brakes IMO. _________________ "Knowledge is Good" - Faber College |
