|
|
Does anyone have pictures of a Westy hitch for a pressed bumper non Barndoor bus (I think that would be post 03/55 but pre '59)? I know there are significant differences between Barndoor and post Barndoor bus hitches, but I'm not sure what the difference is in pressed bumper vs. later bumper hitches.
With that said, and assuming there is a difference, if anyone has a pressed bumper hitch and would like to trade (not assuming it's a straight trade) please let me know.
Thanks in advance. |

talk to campingbox. I am sure that he doesn't have a spare, but he knows the differences and posted some pics in the gallery.

Robert there is differences between the pressed bumper VW-TR-56 and slash bumper VW-TR-59 styles.
Other than the mounts for the bumper which are obvious to see. When I put the 2 styles side by side one hitch is longer than the other. It was a few years ago I did this and off the top of my head I can't remember which one was longer though! Next time i'm at my parts stash i'll have a look.
Of course the tags are different too. _________________ The new http://so23westfalia.com now online!

I believe the press bumper one is shorter. I remember Paul Goodrichs 58 westy had a later style westy hitch and the mounts that attach under the bumper were out further than the bumper. Since the later bumpers have a larger profile, the hitch need to be lengthened to compensate.
Jim - Is your hitch for sure a westy one, sounds like a vw peka hitch, which is very similar to a westy hitch? Does it have the westy tag? Just thought I'd ask. |

The hitch I have on my '55 is different than the ones Alex has pictured on his website.
It will work on the tube trans support busses (different clamping setup than the '56-'58 one pictured).
It's dated 1956.

Maybe my hitch is a vw peka hitch there is no tag(missing).
Anyone have a pick of a vw peka hitch? |

Post a photo, I should be able to recognize it as a Westfalia.
The Peka hitches usually have a piece that goes behind the bumper to strengthen it. |

The tag would most likely have been on the right rear part of the hitch. If it was installed on a bus, it would be visible on the passenger side on the round tube that extends past the bumper, just before it curves up to the ball. Check for two small holes. On the left side (driver side) there should or may be a plate for the wiring coupler (female end). hope this helps.
Personally, I like the peka hitchs better, they seem much stronger.IMO
Post a pic. |

Here are 2 pictures of a Peka hitch i used to own. Does it look like this. ID tag can be seen on the side of one picture. Not sure if angle was original. Definatly was bent and i did not have the outriggers.

This is the one on Greg's post barndoor 55 westy. I posted other pics of it, that I took when the bus was on a lift. Search for "tow and hitch and 55" _________________ The Obsolete Air-Cooled Documentation Project http://oacdp.org/ |

So what I thoght was a Westfalia hitch is a Peka hitch looks just like your old hitch
Are theses hitch worth about the same as westfalia? Was going to through it on my 67 to tow my Westfalia camping trailer with, looks like it's strong and could handle the trailer. |

Man, that's nice and in perfect shape. Don't have to bolt it to the bumper either! So23westfalia.com has the U-bolts that should fit it. Hook up those intemediary mounts, too. |

That is indeed a peka hitch. Not sure about the value but I am sure that I have only seen one for sale in the past few yrs, sold out of FL. They don't seem as common as westy hitches but I'm sure most people would think it's a westy hitch if they saw it on your bus at a show. IMHO, I would say equal value or more. Looks pretty clean too. |

I disagree. I think the Westfalia hitches will always be more desirable and command higher prices. |
