Hello everyone,

I picked up a spare automatic transmission to rebuild and while disassembling it I noticed that the forward planetary ring gear has been rubbing on the inside of the drive shell.

I do not know the history of this transmission so whether this damage happened and then the transmission was rebuilt and these parts were reused or if this was still occurring while the donor vehicle was still being driven.

I did not notice any metal shavings in the pan and only a few of the clutch plates were worn but other than that this was the only real damage that I noticed.

Does anyone know where I could get another drive shell and possibly a forward planetary ring gear set or should I just use these considering these parts are probably hard to find?

I'm afraid unless things have changed, you are looking at good used for hard parts. Unless someone was hording automatics likely only the few rebuilders will have the parts you need.

Nothing else showed signs of wear? I'd have no problem reusing it if just the shell is shaved.

Prices are higher than I prefer to pay, but there is a member that I believe represents the Parts House in Michigan that advertises used transmission parts. Look in the classifieds.

Thanks for the reply.
I will take a look in the classifieds. I did look last night and think I saw the seller you are talking about. I will reach out to them today.

You may not want to limit your search just to Vanagon. I recall a thread building a better automatic or something along those lines. I recall they used parts from an Audi 5000 turbo. Specifically a 4 gear planetary. Porsche 944 used a variation on this trans as well. Maybe even the 924S. You’d have to do a lot of research to figure out what is interchangeable. I couldn’t tell you based on experience. Only what I’ve read.
