Super Rad! Love following along. Does the engine lid clear the valve cover? |

With the OEM valve cover it won't. With the Skunk2 short valve cover it should. _________________ 1986 Volkswagen Vanagon Westfalia "Von Westy"

Next steps:
-wiring harness connections completed.
-wiring harness taken out and fitted with heat shrink and braided sleeve.
-completed harness installed.
-Skunk2 magnesium valve cover painted with Cerakote.
-software tuning of the Haltech ECU. May need a dyno session to complete.
There's several others in the mix, but that's the upcoming highlights reel. _________________ 1986 Volkswagen Vanagon Westfalia "Von Westy"

@Skills-ABSOLUTELY! That chat was a great motivator!
BTW-Black wire, yellow connector was the secret sauce the ECU was looking for. _________________ 1986 Volkswagen Vanagon Westfalia "Von Westy"

Thats fantastic, great job! Still interested in an oil pan to ground measurement in relationship to your ride height when you get a chance. Looking forward to the finnished project. |

I've got a few more projects under the van to wrap up before it comes down off the ramps. Then I can take measurements and pics.
Burped the coolant system using the funnel method. If you don't have one of these funnel kits, get one. Made a big difference. The system was gassier than a baby on broccoli. Once burped the coolant gauge in the dash has it's needle dead center of the LED. Haltech ECU software shows temps of 188 degrees F.
There's a couple of projects top side too with wiring and vacuum lines for brake booster and the line to the fuel pressure regulator.
Ordered the Skunk2 magnesium valve cover tonight. Should be here next week. I will have it coated in cerakote before installing it on the engine.
When the valve cover is on I should be able to start test drives around the neighborhood, and making ECU tuning "improvements." _________________ 1986 Volkswagen Vanagon Westfalia "Von Westy"

While working on the wiring and ECU last night, I taught my analog Vanagon tach gauge a new trick. Tach needle gauge sweep.

Another couple of increments on the conversion.
I had a high pressure power steering line made today by a hydraulic shop. Cost me less than the hose, fittings, and tools to put my own together.
The Skunk2 short magnesium valve cover arrived today too! I'll get is coated in cerakote in the next week or so before installing it on the engine.

Not much to post regarding pics.
Got all the power steering lines installed, relocated the power steering reservoir where the old water boxer's idle air control module lived, and filled the system.
It was at this point I discovered that when the hose make put the adapter on at the shop, they cross threaded it on the hose. So now it won't seal. My basement shop floor looked like a butcher's shop.
I did manage to slow the bleeding, but a new adapter will be required. That'll be ordered tonight.
I did manage to slow the leak enough to do some ECU tuning. Throttle response from the throttle position sensor recalibration works more like the standard Vanagon throttle response. Transient throttle is improving those moments when at idle stabbing the throttle and it gives an enrichment as the throttle body opens.
Dropped the magnesium valve cover off at my friend's place who will coat it in cerakote. Looking forward to getting it back and installed on the engine!
When the power steering issue is resolved, and the valve cover is back, I can do some drivability data logging and perform some more ECU tuning. _________________ 1986 Volkswagen Vanagon Westfalia "Von Westy"

Got the power steering hose issue resolved this morning. Had the hose shop take the old crimp off and put a -6AN female fitting on. A lot easier to find AN fittings. With engine running and steering wheel turned lock to lock it's holding pressure.
Here you can see where I relocated the power steering reservoir.

Pulled the wiring harness out of the van to prep it for dressing. If I make another harness I will go about building it completely different from how I've done this one. However, I have to keep reminding myself that this is R&D efforts, and sometimes you come away with "lessons learned."
