I am having issues with the turn signals and hazard flashers burning up fuses. The high beam lights also do not work. I figured I would remove the turn signal switch and check it out. I think the high beams is not making contact and not sure on flasher issue. When looking into finding a new switch nothing shows up for a 1972 411. I looked at the 72 bug switch but looks a little different and looks to have 9 wires. Mine has only 6. Will the 72 bug switch work? Are the unused wires?
Also when I removed my switches this metal piece in photo fell out. Not sure where it goes. See photo

Update on electrical issues.
Turn signals all work including hazards. Problem was turn signal switch was bad replaced with 72 super beetle switch 9 wire unit worked fine.
Turn signal relay burnt out and front turn signal light prongs were touching causing a short.
High beams now work also turn signal high beam switch fixed.
Horn works now. Only on horn and it was bad along with a bad horn relay. Bought 2 new horns and a relay and all good.
Fuel gauge not working cause by a bad sender. Could not find the correct one but got one that works for now just shorter. Read full when full but when it says empty it is not empty. Has a big reserve for now. If anyone knows a better solution for the fuel sender let me know.
Buffing out the paint now. Will add photos later. I will need to find some trim with out so many dings.

Hello Alan! Sorry I could not get to this back when you had the issue. Yes, super beetle switch assemblies work as well as late model type 3. Both the turn signal switch and wiper/washer lever assemblies are 111 part prefix meaning type 1 based.
The fuel sending unit....according to the part # is unique to type 4. Its part # is 411 919 049. I assume you are working with a type 3 sending unit. These are identical but shorter. There are more than a few people who have detailed "how-to's" for repair in the type 3 forum if you search there.

Thank you for the information you have provided. You have been helpful and I’m sure I will have more questions as I get this 411 ready for spring.

There's a diagram on here somewhere that tells you what each wire does. I found it one day and used to check the turn signal switch I have. Basically you put your meter on continuity check. Then you attach the leads to the different wires. From there you flip the switch into the different modes. This will tell you if something is wrong internally in your switch.
