This is a '71 ghia and I'm trying to determine what color it is so I can match it on a repair to the rear of car. It's certainly not one of the stock colors for 1971 but looks like something I've seen on an earlier Ghia, being a green with a fair amount of blue in it.
I explored the paint codes and swatches I found on thesamba.com for ghias thinking maybe the previous owner chose a color from the past. Closest colors looked like Malachite Green or Amazon Green. But given how computer monitors have different color balances and car photos have reflections and shadows, pretty near impossible to be sure.
Also this car's paint looks metallic to me which I don't think VW used. I'm told that some paint shops have a way to scan a finish and come up with a match. Any experience with this?

Take it to a automotive paint store, they should have a hand held scanner that will read the color. make sure reading are taken from several locations on the body. |

As stated above, auto body supply stores should have several different color cameras. The higher priced paints typically have better brand support for color matching. I’d look into a solvent base coat line like PPG Deltron. Stay away from low cost basecoats unless you want to have to do a lot of tinting to get the color corrected. Any color camera should get you into a “blendable” match with a quality solvent base coat line. Where I’m at nothing waterborne is available over the counter to walk in customers. The fun part about ghias is finding a place to break off the repair job. _________________ The best things in life aren't Things
