I have a 74 Thing project car with no engine. Given that I don't care about heat in the car, is most or some or none of the tin unique to the Thing. I am not concerned with originality either. Just function.
I am a long ways from getting an engine and wondering if I should be collecting tin in the meantime. Thanks! Great forum.
i did search but didn't find exactly the info I needed. I know there are unique pieces but not sure I need all of them for my purposes. |

The Thing uses a Type 1 engine, same as a Beetle. The tin is the same except on the 1973 which had a gas heater and no heater boxes. _________________ Glenn

^^^^^^^^
That's for a 73 only correct?
He has a 74 which has fresh air and heater boxes... or am I mistaken? _________________ Glenn

You are correct Glenn.
1974 models have heat exchangers, like a Beetle, but a single Thing specific muffler.
But if the OP intends to substitute "J tubes" the heat exchangers, then he should use the so-called "industrial tins" in place of the "HE"s.
A 1973 style exhaust system could be used on a '74 if no heat is needed, but valve adjustments are a little tougher.
The "protection shields" under the engine don't do much, but they do help support the "industrial tins". |

I have Type 126 "Industrial Tins" on my 2180 which has a header and no heater boxes.
