I am wondering what it might mean if I am able to turn on the dome light, but not able to get the bus to start without a jump?
Battery works fine in my Bimmer. _________________ - Nate P.

Starter is going out, starter is not getting juice, starter is not getting enough juice. You should do a search on this since it seems to be an epedemic right now......any forum.
Most suggestions will be to look for one problem, but I've learned with my starter that there can be confounding factors that you'll need to consider.
For instance, your starter is going out but isn't dead yet. It takes more juice to turn it, but one of your connections is dirty or has a connection somewhere that is providing resistence. In this case there are two problems, but there can be more (your ignition could be going out).
Again, search around for a moment. Grab your mulitmeter and start checking voltages. That'll be your first step. Familiarize yourself with the back of that starter because it may take a while to solve the problem.

yea, once you jump it, it starts no problem. Even from a cold start.
Thanks I will check that stuff. _________________ - Nate P.

Nate, mine had the exact same symptoms. Here are the issues I've discovered on mine: starter wearing out but turns with good juice, some wires had connections in them that gave too much resistence, terminal connectors were dirty or just old, original wiring had been altered and didn't work as well, and to top it all off the battery was going out and wouldn't take a full charge.
I've been working my way through these one-by-one. Started out with a new battery, then found the bad terminal connectors, then found the spliced wiring. Things are getting much better now, but I will hav ethe starter rebuilt when finances allow.

I'm also prone to the starter problems these days. I replaced my starter/solenoid with a new rebuilt Bosch, but then the problem continued. I have narrowed it down to ignition problem, but until I can get it into my mechanic, I wired a second wire from the ignition terminal on the solenoid to the engine bay to touch to the batterey as a back up.
Mine will start 7-8 times out of 10, but when it doesn't, I go back and touch the wire to the battery and off I go for another 7-8 times. |

I had a similar problem once and lost my mind over it and had the generator tested, cleaned the starter contacts, and had the battery load tested. The battery tested good but had a 'weak charge.' Too many short trips, I thought.....highway ran it, no change. Swapped the battery for a used one, my problem disappeared. Try it if you have a spare. Even a battery place told me the old one was good......don't know why they didn't know....maybe it was good for a new car but not an old one with ancient wiring. |
