|
|
I rolled the dice and ordered a GKN/Loebro front axle assembly from Autohauz. It took only a day to get here but the flange on the outboard CV is banged up. I'm not familiar with exactly how the the outside CV assembly and the inner race of the wheel bearing/seal meet up. It seems like this could be a problem for a clean mate with the bearing seal. Is this kind of damage a no-go?
thanks!

That is a problem. If received like that, return it. If you done did it, you can try to repair and/ or buy another. _________________ Sorry About That Chief.

Mine had a dent there too.
Depends what your metal-working abilities are.
You just have to tap it back out to where it belongs.
It's soft steel, and doesn't affect the sealing at all (when you get it off the seal lip).
You just have to bend that seal-holder out to resemble the un-bent portions.
I repaired mine in a fraction of the time it would take to even re-pack it for return.
Like 3 minutes.
But I work with metals a lot - YMMV.
As a Syncro nut, I'd help if ya wanna send me a PM.
Rejoice in the "availability" of this unicorn part.
And pray for "quality inside" the CV. _________________

Get the seal out first.
Then use a common flat blade screwdriver and start at one end and put the blade in the slot for the seal and gently pry it back halfway to shape - that is- do not try to get full shape on the first try. Then do it again working your way across the dent.
It's not hard to do.
Instead of trying to pry it use a twisting of the blade to lift it back to shape. _________________ This free advice is worth exactly what you paid for it.

On mine I was able to knock it back into shape from here.
With a strangely shaped chisel that I have.
Mine only had one dent and I was able to make it look “like it never happened”.
All you need to do is knock it back far enough that the resultant shape of the seal lip is consistent all around. _________________

Thanks gentlemen for the input. I like the idea of getting that seal out before going at the flange with a screwdriver -- but it wasn't coming out easily. So I decided to punt and send it back-- free shipping on returns. Someone dropped this one - I'll keep my fingers crossed that they pack the replacement a little better. _________________ '87 Syncro Westfalia

Who's got free shipping on returns? That's almost un-capitalistic! _________________ This free advice is worth exactly what you paid for it.

Dang I wish I had that CV.
Restoring that seal-guard to as-new is a 3 minute task for me.
AND I have a brand new Lobro CV - that the spline is too tight to go on the shaft.
I didn't know until trying to install it.
Doubt I can return a new CV purchased in 2016... _________________

I bought 2 a couple weeks ago, just now looked at them, both are dented in several places, but none as bad as the one in the pictures. The price was cheaper than anywhere else and they are getting harder to find. I guess I'll keep mine and rework the metal as needed.

easy to repair. But look at the seal. If the lip is straight and un-affected by the bent steel flange then straightening it won't make any difference.
Except aesthetics,
and 'because you can',
and because you have the will.
It's real soft steel, just bumping around in a box bends it.
That's how easy it is to straighten too.
Mine was real easy to make perfect. _________________
