I'm confused on what years VW had generator-mounted regulators vs engine bay-mounted generators. Diving into the archives and the parts book doesn't seem to help.

For my '65, the original wiring suggests that this was remote-mounted. The parts book only shows illustrations for generator-mounting. I'm sure there's an easy answer out there somewhere.

From what I can tell from the catalog, my '65 should have the 311 903 801 reg, which seems to be a remote-mounted reg.

Your "Easy answer out there somewhere" starts with looking through the illustrations, probably the illustration of adjusting the fan belt tension would be a good start, of the various year model "Owners Manuals" on this forum. What do you see illustrated for your 1965 model?

If your bus has the regulator mount welded onto the right rear wheel well inside the engine compartment, then it would have the regulator not mounted to the generator.

If you bus was built with 1500cc engine from factory, then it would have the regulator not mounted to the generator.

1500cc was an option in the 1963 model year. For 1964 and later at least in N. America it became the standard.

I checked out the owner's manual and found multiple images of a a remote voltage regulator. Good suggestion.

Technically, a parts manual should be the authoritative resource for correctly identifying this (via serial number to part number). But as we can see in the parts manual, illustrations for all the variants aren't included. My concern with using the owner's manual is the unknown use of stock images from previous model years (as illustrated below, also from the '65 owner's manual).

Thanks, this also helps!

Glad to help. There is another way to look at it also. If any bus came with 1500cc engine it would have the ceiling mount for the 1500 air cleaner. Even if that is cut off there will most likely be part of it there or if it was welded in by some sho back in the day the weld most likely would not be of factory quality.
