Hello All,
I purchased this primer, for the first time. it says anti rust on the can, and I figured it was good for bare metal and over anything else, paint, bondo etc.
I sprayed 2 light coats following recommendations on the can. Scuffed with dry 320. Let it dry for 24 hours in 65-degree garage and tried to dry sand. It was still gummy. Tried wet sanding and same problem. Called the manufacturer. They claimed I did something incorrectly. (Been using other rattle cans since the 1960's without ever seeing this and the following.
Waited 4 days and then wet sanded with 320 and covered that with their primer filler. (no anti rust on can) Waited for a few days and wet sanded it with 600. Sprayed PPG Essential single stage paint over it and it lifted. Waited 48 hours, re-sanded with 320 and sprayed Essential epoxy primer, and once again it lifted.
Scraped some of the primer off with my fingernail and everywhere it was lifting there was the primer above and the 320 scratches were gone!
Help what brand primer filler do you recommend I use to end this nightmare?
Thank you in advance. M |

i dont know whats under there but it looks to have reacted, anytime ive ever gotten that, i strip the area to bare metal and use wax/grease remover and alcohol then spray again, ususally thats either it reacted with something underneath, or there was dirt/grease or spraying too long between coats |

I did not have this issue when I painted my bug (water based paint), but when I used default solvent based base coat I had the wrinkle/lift problem. It sucks when you are trying to lay down base and it lifts just as fast. I stripped those areas down, sprayed more primer, tried again. Lifted again. I went to the local hardware store and bought some sealer in a can from a different brand, sprayed that over the problem areas to get a buffer between the base and whatever it was below. That worked. _________________ 1968 Beetle torn apart again

Thank you for the responses. Yes, it reacted with the primer underneath the epoxy. They are not compatible with each other. My bad forgetting the past. Yeesh! I have sanded to bare metal and will do it right this time.
Thanks again. M |
