Here she is folks,
The 66 Baja.
There she sat, pics are after I went and pieced it back together. Was disassembled down to the axle bearing housings.
P/O was having an issue with the Trans popping out of gear and had already swapped in another transaxle while maintaining the issue still.
So, now it has a 1968 long axle transaxle with backing plates and drums from the 66, with a spacer to make up for the axle spline length increase.
Anywho... cause of the issue is TBD!
Couldn't leave it, so brought it home.
Much needed bath was given
Also spent about half a day cleaning out the inside
This is the worst rot I've uncovered
The power plant is a remanufactured engine of unknown size or age.
It is single port with dual empi 34s and non doghouse cooler.
About all I know for now.
Anyway... there she is, another ride added to my projects.
I have so many disassembled that I'm just going to get it running and have fun until it's time comes. _________________ YHWH NISSI

Mk, a long day of work on the 66 baja
New axle seals,o-rings etc.
New brake shoes n hardware.
New brake drums.
Had newer e brake cables already.
New axle boots.
New rear brake hose on driver's side.
New rear wheel cylinders.
New hard lines from both wheel cyl to rubber lines
New throwout bearing and clips.
Dealt with throttle cable, was already removed... New cable wouldn't go in tunnel tube.
Used the universal HD style that uses the plastic tubing, ran along side the tunnel through the brake line grommet to engine.
Ignition switch made magic smoke couple days ago. It already had a universal style switch, replaced with same and the fuse. All has been well there so far.
Pressure washed the engine with tins removed. Replaced chrome cylinder tins with a stock set that I cut down on the ends to look like offroad style. Didn't find a good set of sled tins so I will buy some.
Also cut off the weird looking exhaust tail and made my own, tip isn't welded on... still deciding on final likings.
Attempted to rebuild the carbs, both are extremely corroded inside the accelerator pump housing.
Ran ok for about 10 mins, carbs really need replaced... not sure what I'll do there yet...
Don't really want to but a new pair of 34s.
New plug wires.
And yes, even after all these years... I had 3 and 4 wires misplaced with each other
And I think that's about it.
A few pics of how it is atm.
Will have to adjust the saggy butt.
Looking good though, imo ofcourse. _________________ YHWH NISSI

Been tackling the fun task of wiring sortment
Took some head scratching to figure out what all was missing based on the wring diagrams I found.
Unfortunately, the "vw 1300" wiring diagram posted in the archives for the 66 model isn't accurate to a 66 model
So... once I realized that was the problem, I found a more accurate diagram... unbelievably on Jbugs website.
So... the most obvious... no wiring diagram required.
The turn signal lever with the dimmer was missing and something else was attached.
So... how was it dimming the lights
The headlight switch... parking lamp position was dim, headlight on position was bright.
Also the emergency flasher switch is missing, the relay was not in use and someone had a toggle switch there to turn an amplifier on/off
So... anyway... was able to remove the extra turn signal relay and start wiring up the original e flasher relay.
I need a good E flasher switch and a good turn signal switch.
The headlight/wiper motor switch power sources are swapped...
I think... next... I will replace the turn signal switch and remove the headlight switch and try to get the original functions working there then the same for an E flasher switch setup.
Anywho... there's a small update _________________ YHWH NISSI

Turn signal switch has been secured from the classifieds
While we wait...
We need headliner and window seals
Time to get on that.
Here we see the backside of the headliner... covered in mouse waste... how do they get in there???
The window seals are all super crackily which I assumed was letting water in... turns out, I wasn't wrong.
Ran a grinder wire wheel over the entire area then closed up with some primer. May do more here later... not sure what else to do though...
Also began stripping all the layers of paint off. Just FYI... the orange paint job was some house paint according to the guy who sprayed it.. so... it has to go.
Welcome to Bondo-ville.
Looks like there is a fiber glass patch repair on the lower quarter, assuming the body filler is a skim coat to help blend that area in.
More to come _________________ YHWH NISSI

Oh sweet victory (partial)
Bought a vw hinge pin removal tool on ebay for about $40ish and it actually worked.... twice.
The screws on both lower hinges are rusted into the a pillar, I needed to pull the upper hinge pin on driver's side anyway to replace with a pin that doesn't have a mirror mount.
The threads in the puller went poopoo when I attempted the 3rd pin, trying to pull the lower pin on passenger side.
I'm so used to modern day tools and products not working that... well... I didn't expect it to pull a single hinge pin... but it did
Now my escutcheon tool, well it didn't do it's job even once.
I've already tried all the primal approaches I know of on the headlight and wiper switches and the tool isn't strong enough... I guess I am at a point to where I will have to cut the ends off and replace the switches.
Oh well, either do it don't right.
Was running out of daylight, even though the hinge pin puller did work, it wasn't fast and easy.
Used the blade on the door paint and was greeted by another large body filler patch
Enjoy! _________________ YHWH NISSI
