Hello everyone, I just wanted to share about a mistake I made. I sanded down old paint on my four fenders ,hood and decklid. after sanding with 220 grit There were some areas that had bare metal showing. I didn’t apply anything to the bare metal and went right over everything with Omni MP 282 primer surfacer and realized the next day that it’s not recommended for bare metal even if it has a tooth. I’m assuming that I have to sand everything down again and treat the bare metal areas within an epoxy or an edge primer first? Has anyone made the same mistake? I called my local paint store and the guy said that I can go right over bear metal with no problem but then I called PPG and they said that it is not recommended. I also noticed two areas that were small where the primer didn’t stick and underneath was bare metal

Primer did not stick, did you degrease properly before you applied the primer? I would not think that it would come loose this quickly unless there was something on the metal. If you do decide to sand it down and apply something else, make sure its very clean. Nothing will stick if there is foreign material on the metal. not even self etching primer. _________________ 1968 Beetle torn apart again

Everyone makes mistakes. The best advice I can give is to start over. Yeah...I know...IT SUCKS, but trust me you will be REALLY pissed when you get it painted and areas start to fail because of a bad primer substrate.
What caused it? Likely contamination of some sort. Even the degreasers can leave residue. I found that using alcohol as my FINAL wipe down before paint worked the best. That was for me...your results maybe differ |
