Does it matter what color is used? |

Is it the last thing you are applying before the base coat? |

Yes, just in the fact that when you get rock chips in the future a non contrasting color will not show up the chips as bad.
Also if you use it as a seal coat just before paint (some do) then it should be somewhat in the same color range so that it doesn't take multiple coats of topcoat to get consistent coverage. Ie; use a dark primer color for dark topcoats and a light primer color for lighter top coats. _________________ Our cars get old, we get old but driving an old VW never gets old! |

No. I’m taking the entire body down to bare metal and wanted to protect it from flash rusting. |

If you’re going down to bare metal you’re going to be doing bodywork and be repriming it any way. When you re prime it I’d use something close to the color like said above for said reasons . There are lots of companies that sell to tint-able primers . I put epoxy primer on mine after I stripped it and had to wipe the whole car with a skim coat of filler and re primed it. As far is coverage of paint you should make sure you have enough to cover it regardless of what color underlayment color you have down first . That’s why I said no . It really doesn’t matter. You will be be putting something else over it anyway . _________________ I may not be the best, but when the top 10 get together, they all talk about me. |

Sometimes the effect you want is dictated by the shade of primer under it. I used a white high build under an orange paint. It made the orange much brighter. As a matter of fact the paint seller showed pics of the base coat sprayed over white and over a dark primer...huge difference in the final color. _________________ 1966 Manx clone (possibly a Joe Poty Enterprises) named SANDY. It depends so much on how transparent your topcoat is how it effects the final color.
What you want is the least coats of paint possible and still have good even color. Multiple coats leads to a thick paint finish. That will result in easily chipped paint, cracks and crazing later on. _________________ Our cars get old, we get old but driving an old VW never gets old! |

VW always used gray primer in later production cars, the only exception I’ve seen is with Saturn Yellow where they used white.
I think the only reason to worry about primer color is if you are trying to get by with fewer top coats. _________________ Go Reds! Smash state!
