Hey Guys, I have a nice original pan on my 1965 Beetle and I want to take the 50 years of road grime and mud, dirt off.

I started to clean one section with Simple Green and when I got the dirt off, found a mixture of original black paint and light surface rust.

I would love to get the surface rust off without sanding. Also, maybe make it look better. Boiled linseed oil maybe?

I want to keep the originality, so I won't be painting the pan.

Any thoughts?

Scrap off the loose rust with a good wire brush, then Ospho, followed by primer and paint.

thank you. I have used those coatings before but that is not what I am after. I want to keep the car honest and not cover up the pan

Clean the pan.
Brush off surface rust with wire brush
If surface rust is heavy, use a mild acid, e.g. vinegar, ospho, citric acid to remove it
Wash with water ( or water blaster) to neutralise acid
Coat with sheep fat by brush or spray can or normal spray gun.

Sheep fat? Yes, lanolin. Look up Lanox or similar.
Lanolin is the antirust treatment of choice for many 4WD enthusiasts who regularly drive on or near the beach down in Oz.
