Hey all. Hoping for some finishing guidance on what may be an odd request.

I'm planning on doing something a bit different with the tins on the Ghia I'm building with my son. I'm going after the "glossy wrinkle" finish seen on many metal/industrial assemblies in the US from WW2 through the 1960's.

...think the "Vita Ray Chamber" in Captain America: First Avenger...

I'll be applying multiple coats of clear over the finish to allow easy wipe-down/cleanup, but I'm not sure how to get that level of "ripple" without it just looking like a bad paint job with terrible wrinkle or massive orange peel.

This will only be for the shroud/tins/doghouse.

Has anyone attempted a finish like this before on the board?

I think I may be getting close, but I'd still like any input if someone here has done similar. The final finish in this link looks like it would need three coats of clear and a cut to get near what I saw on that machinery in the movie.

Well years ago I restored a WWII BC611, and was lucky enough to still be able to find the correct wrinkle finish paint in a rattle can.
Not the best pic below, but it is wrinkled.

Unfortunately the supplier that I got the paint from is long gone. From what I have read, they are now using black or grey wrinkle finish (readily available) and then once dried spraying flat od over that. Ive never tried it, but you might give it a try.

I have used powder coating in the past.

We used this paint on my son's 1990 Miata and it turned out remarkably well.

Note: If you have to paint over the wrinkle to get the color you want the texture won't be as pronounced due to filling in the valleys.
