Is it possible to remove the rear axles from the swing axle tranny without removing the bearings before hand?

Thanks for the help!

That's what I thought but wanted to ask just in case I was wrong.

Thanks Dougy.

Actually, the correct answer is "Yes!" as shown here:

You may have missed it but the axle tubes have bearings that need removing in order to remove the axle... They are visible in the video...

It looks to me that axle can be removed withOUT removing bearing from tube end casting:

Or, is there some other bearing I'm not seeing?

No, you've got it right...there's no other bearing to deal with. Removing the axles while the trans is still in the car is a bit trickier though. The frame horns get in the way of removing the axle tube retainers.

Being that the rear wheel bearing is press-fit onto the axle, a 3-jaw puller will help in removing the bearing housing/axle tube assembly, together with the bearing, from the axle before removing the axle shaft from the transmission.

I actually like that method shown in the video because it pulls concentrically on the axle tube retainer as it breaks it free from the side cover, thus no prying around the sides later on.

He never actually got the axle out during that video, he fought with the snap ring without success. I can’t imagine trying to do this while still in the car.

Yeah, that huge C-clip is daunting! Maybe they cut the video short there due to the language he may have used for venting frustration? He does have a continuation video which starts with the axle shaft already out loose.

And yet, that's my intention (Plan A) because it's probably not as big a job as taking apart the web of structural steel supports for my buggy's rear bumper, fiberglass, and gas tank. Those things would all need removal for entire drive train to come out together. I'll do it (Plan B) if it comes to that.

Tranny won't stay in 4th, but I still get to use the buggy for short trips. So I'm putting off transaxle job until daily high temperatures are well below the ~95°F we have here now.

BTW huge thanks's @rcooled & @Busstom for your words of wisdom. We are so lucky in this forum to have experienced people who are willing share their knowledge with such excellent communication skills.

I'm hoping to find enough wiggle room after removing all 3 mounts and raising gearbox.

As can be seen in the following picture, there is indeed plenty of wiggle room:

Got the axle tube, that monsterous snap ring, axle shaft, fulcrums, and all. Didn't actually need to jack gearbox as high up as in pic. My kitcar has room to jack higher, not sure if a Beetle body would allow this.
