Is it possible to remove the generator and install an alternator conversion kit without dropping the motor out of the ghia?

Yes, but it's easier to drop the engine. That also gives you the opportunity to fix other things such as engine/body seal, clutch, throwout bearing, flywheel seal and others.

Yes it can be done. Stock engine set-up? Not as easy but still do able. Dual carbs ? Really easy.

unbolt fan, unbolt/unscrew backing plate, un-clamp generator, remove belt, remove wiring, remove generator.

Got the right alternator/gen stand?

Does your kit have a slanted fuel pump and matching pushrod because you need them also. Drop the motor you may need to add/remove fan shims and it's easier with the motor out.
