Hi All.
More questions
....are these parts only for the 412 variant (1973) or can one source from other VW's ?
1) hinge covers for the tailgate.
2) air intake bellows that covers the fan>rear panel.
3) automatic transmission rubber doughnut/mount.
4) engine rubber mounts on cross bar.
Many thanks

1) hinge covers for the tailgate.
The part #'s are
Left: 461 867 527
Right: 461 867 528
From those part #'s....they will be 411/412 only parts.
Here is a left side one in the Samba classifieds. For NOS $30 is a good price.

Look around to find another for the right maybe
2) air intake bellows that covers the fan>rear panel.
Part # 021 119 663. It should be 411/412 variant/wagon only. If you cannot get one, there are some ways to do without as long as your engine compart has all of the sheet metal and the foam seal. You could simply get a leaf screen from a type 4 bus engine and you should be fine.
3) automatic transmission rubber doughnut/mount.
The plate on the end of the transmission that has the rubber knob or bushing on it is called a limiting flange (thats exactly what it does, limit movement). I am still looking in the parts book but I have never been able to find a seperate part number for the rubber bushing itself. I believe it ws originally bonded on in one piece.
That being said, its not a very good part in the first place. What I have been able to use is a front engine mount bumper from a VW Rabbit mk1. Cut a hole in the end, use a little force and slip it on. You may have to trim/sand around the lip a little.

An even better way to do this is to grind off all of the old rubber. Get a rubber sheet like an inner tube from a tire. Spray it with contact cement, wrap it tightly around the tube on the mount until the OD is ~ 0.0652" smaller than the hole in the rear beam. Works perfectly.
4) engine rubber mounts on cross bar.
There are two part #'s
021 199 231- Bonded rubber mounting- Engine carrier
From chassis 410 2000 001 to 411 100 000
021 199 231 C- Bonded rubber mounting- Engine carrier
From chassis number 412 2000 001
I do not recall what the difference in these two parts is but the first number is a middle years 411. Yours should be a 412 so the second number should be fine.
These are also a bus part and you can buy them in many places. I would search on the bay window bus forum and ask who makes GOOD ones. The problem I have found with these over the decades is that the bonding on many of them is poor. They start to delaminate from the mounting bolts if they get any oil at all on them.

Some recently in the past few weeks in this forum shows how he made his own using aluminum instead of rubber. Being that the transmission is suspended in the middle with the big rubber bushings at the center bar, solid mounts could probably be used here and would also provide a more accurate drivetrain package location.
You could just put a rubber washer between the bar and the bottom of this part and get rid of the vast majority of harmonic vibration. Ray |
