|
|
Hi all - my bus has been laid for a year after having some work done. Turn signals are not working - just two green lights on the dash and I discovered the relay was loose - not connected.
I had a look at the wiring diagram - with just the blue/red and the white + plugged into the relay I was able to make the lights flash manually if I wiggled the wires - see this video:

Note that I don't have the brown wire connected - I did try it but it made no difference.
Is this indicative of a bad relay - I bought it a few years ago but the bus has not been used - just stored. I appreciate it is an after-market relay but would it go wrong having not been used?
Thanks in advance. _________________ 1972 Type 2 1600cc

you are saying that the outside lights do not light up?
Did it ever work with that relay? _________________ "Most people don't know what they're doing, and a lot of them are really good at it." - George Carlin |

Did work previously yes. Correct, only the light on the dash light up but they are static, light themselves don't light.
They do work and light outside when I wiggle the wire per the video. _________________ 1972 Type 2 1600cc

Seems like it's time for a new relay. |

it is either a wire crimp or inside the relay. _________________ "Most people don't know what they're doing, and a lot of them are really good at it." - George Carlin |

I think I have got the relay wired up wrong. the white (+) should go to pin 49 which is where I have the blue wire connected in my video. That is terminal 31 which should have the brown wire. the blue wire should be on the terminal which I don't have connected currently - I think
The white and brown wires are just a 12v positive/negative feed as I understand it so using a multi meter I should get a 12v reading? The blue I guess is a switched live? _________________ 1972 Type 2 1600cc

This diagram for a '72 show J2 (the flasher relay) has having three connections, I would assume all three are necessary:

The diagrams for later years essentially show the same thing. J2 is in current tracks #44 and 45:

Issue was a bad ground - yes 3 connections are required. A live feed (49), the ground (31) and the live feed to the flasher hand switch control (49a) which presumably switches the feed on and off to give the flashing bulbs.
I changed the ground as well as the relay to remedy.
Thanks all. _________________ 1972 Type 2 1600cc
