Hi All
I'm going to re-fit the engine to my wife's 412e variant soon and have been wondering if I need to allow the automatic transmission to drop off it's top mounts . thus letting it drop lower.
anyone know the answer? to save me going up to the garage to check dims. it's 6 degrees here in UK today.

many thanks

Ian

Ok....so you have the enine out and the transmission is still in right?

Really the best way to do this is as a complete unit bolted together. But if you already have it seperated out, yes, you can tilt the trans downward and the engine upward.

Once you have the four bolst in, then do the three torque converter bolts.

But....the best way to do this:

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

So....
1. DO NOT remove the ears from the transmission (part #15). Too hard to et back on and tighten down.

2. DO NOT pull out bolt #20 that goes through the rubber bushing #17 on each side

3. Instead.....remove bolt #30 from each side of the beam above (part #25).
You may also need to remove the cross bolts part #26 on each (its been I while I cannot remember for sure).

The reason for this is because if you remove the bolts that go through the center of each rubber bushing...leaving the bushings attached to the rail/beam #25 above....and then try to lift the transmission and engine combination up at one time and get those rubber bushinsg back into the slots on the "ears"....the angle makes it very hard to get the rubber into the slots in theears. You end up prying and pushing because the transmission/engine package wants to slide rearward.

This is a lot of work and tears the rubber bushings up.

Its easier to lower the tranmission with the upper beam #25 still attached....join the engine and torque converter....lift the jack up and use a pointed bar to align the holes in the end of beam #25.
