Hi All,
I have been slowly restoring my 58 beetle. When I initially got the beetle it had windscreen washer set up that I wanted to change. I removed the washer motor and did some digging into its possible origins. I wanted some help to see if based on my research my thoughts may be correct.
I was thinking that the 6v SWF windscreen washer motor was from a 356B. (As a possible option). Everything works fine as i tested it whilst it was on the car.
I did have a look on some parts sites and what they showed was very close to what I have. The 12V set up for the 356C can be seen in the below link for reference.

Have a look at the photos and let me know your thoughts. I can also see a green residue on some of the screws like the 356C motor. |

Hello,
I think you are right. Seems to be the same 6 Volt SWF washer motor that was used as option for 356 B, C.
Shortly ago I sold a 59 beetle with the same SWF washer motor to a friend (who owns an early Super 90 T 5 sunroof coupe.) There was a SWF aftermarket set for multi purpose use. Must be top quality. I wondered, my 59 beetle was parked for around 20 years outside, before I got it. Water filled in, ignition on, pushed the button and - after about 10 seconds of dry electric roumoring - splash!
Wondering, in the sparebooks there is no electrical switch or wire to find.
What about a switch in your beetle and on SWF motor? Missing the electrical connecting posts.
For beetle the first factory washer system for beetles appeared Aug 60 for the 61 model. Of course, should be very interesting for 356 B, C fans. |

Hi,
Thanks for your reply.
I did a little more searching on the beetle and it is not an older style push button. Overall it was a very much a put together system with bits and pieces.
I couldn't find much more information about the options besides the below Dash layout from a 356B from 1960. It shows a manual foot control for the windshield washer (21) and a pull knob for windshield washer.
I did take a few more photos showing the connecting posts on the motor and noticed a slight 6V engraving. I took some close up photos showing the remnants of green on the screws.

Thanks for the new pics and your answer.
The motor semms to be the same, as in my 59 beetle was.
I also have 356 A, B, C manuals and spare books.
Still wondering where from and how the electricity to the 356 washer motor comes. The black rubber foot pump of 356 B and C normally has no electrical contact and another one, or another switch I could not find in the 356 spare books.
For some universal aftermarket sets there were foot pumps with combined electrical switch available. But somethng like that I could not find in a 356 spare list.
What kind of switch is installed in your 58 beetle? |
