I have previously posted about a 1776 spec, but I am still trying to get it right!
I’m from the UK. I have a 73 Karmann Ghia, which was imported from South Africa in the 90’s. I mention South Africa, because they are notorious as having parts ‘left on the shelf’, as part of the build; for example, mine has swing axles. On top of this, the previous owner was ripped off having it as a ‘rat car’, but it was engineered/repaired/botched badly!
I intend to put a 1776 engine in it. I am torn as to what carbs to use – either dual Weber (genuine!) ICT 34’s or IDF 40’s (or any other?)
I have read various comments, and gather the majority support the 40’s. why? Does anybody know the rough difference in consumption and power? What are recommend?
The spec of engine, I plan, is:
Used/reconditioned 1600 case pre-machined including full flow
Stock Heads with stock size stainless steel valves, single HD springs and HD collets and retainers
Engle 110 or 100 (?) camshaft, 1.25 ratio rocker assemblies, new cam gear, Cam Follower
AA Piston and Liners 90.5mm
Stock Crankshaft fitted with Crank Drive Gears
26mm oil pump
Twin Weber Carbs - 34 ICT or 40 IDF Including all fittings & Balance Pipe Kit (offset manifolds & linkage kit)
123 Distributor, coil and HT leads
Fuel Pump - Electric
200mm Flywheel
Exhaust (what do you suggest?)
Stock Heat Exchangers (keep original?)
If there is anything that sticks out as wrong or you would change, please let me know! |

Stock heads, non- counterweighted crank indicates a conservative motor. Conservative motor indicates 34ICTs. An Engle 100 w/ 1.25 rockers is a lot of cam for a conservative motor. 1.25 rockers push you further in the wrong direction.
Go with a CB 2228 or 2280 cam. Carefully dial in your compression at 8.5:1. This will play nice with your stock (ish) heads and your old re- worked case.
When you're done don't wring your motor's neck redlining it with the stock crank. Or... add a counterweighted crank while your motor is in pieces.

A W100 is fine for an engine like that. when heads are untouched it wohnt rev much anyway.
W110 is for dual carbs.
Exhaust. Whatever you desire better than stock or the stupid VW sport _________________ https://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=435993 |

Alstrup, I am planning on Twin carbs.... are you, in that case, use a W110? What size carbs would you go with? Thanks |

Frankly, I am not good at building or recommending combo´s for such budget builds, because I know how much can be achieved with even just a little selective shopping and massaging of varius parts.
I´ve shown this one before, but still. 1776 a 218/119 cam, detailed stock heads, 9-1 CR, slightly modded dual 36 Dellorto´s, VS sport muffler. That cam is approx 7 degrees MILDER than the W110 but 30 years newer in design. The other parts naturally also play a role:
Personally I would much rather save money on machining the case and save a little on the cylinderkit and use that on the heads and build a 1600 like this:
Such a 1600 will run in circles around most budget 1776´s, run cooler AND do better fuel efficiency.
Just FYI.
Getting back to your question.
If you go with 34 ICT´s, use a milder cam such as the W100, CB2239, 2232 or the 2280. - Beware of the efforts needed to get them dialed in properly. (Its a good deal)
If you go with dual 40 IDF´s you can go with a W110, sincce the port on port induction will more or less take care of the lower rpm issues combined with dual sgl carbs. _________________ https://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=435993 |
