Thing vs Type 1 front trailing arms

Is there a difference between Thing and Type 1 front trailing arms? Are the ball joints different?

Balljoints are different. Trailing arms are the same I think?

The part where the bottom of the shock absorber is attached is longer on a vw181 trailing arm.

Trailing Arms and Ball Joints are different. Bugs will fit in the same holes in the front beam but the Bug ball joints will not fit the Thing Spindles, you could use Bug Trailing arms and spindles which would drop the front end about 3".
