Wish I would have known this years ago because I am 6’3”.
I always wondered why these silver stops were in the rear ends of the seat tracks. On my wagon to remove the seats you have to bend a steel stop at the front of the track…it is part of the track and not removable. Bend it enough and the seats will slide forward and out. So, why the rear stop looking thing? I took the 2 bolts out and removed this stop in both tracks. It uncovers 2 more adjustment detent/holes and just like that 2 more inches of legroom! Love discoveries like this.

Well, I really don’t know. I am sure others will chime in.
The only reason for these I believe is to limit the seat backwards so maybe you don’t smash the people in the back seat. |

Other things to be careful of is to not over extend the front center, vertical adjustment support and to not accidentally put the battery up against the forward edge of the seat.

All clearances look good for the battery. It is a group 42 which is the standard size for a 412. Photos are with the rear track stops out for extra legroom. 1st photo with the seat in the lowest position. 2nd photo is the seat in it’s highest position. Took these pictures with the seat trims not installed. I like it!

didnt think about the battery to be honest  , im not sure i really understand why Vw put the battery under the drivers seat I had thought about relocating mine but maybe not.

I guess they wanted to move the gravity center a bit forward, thats why the battery is under the drivers front seat...and as a (common) option to help running the Eber there is a battery under each front seat.
Putting the batteries in the front trunk was not done since they wanted all luggage space they could get.

Yes, the 2 battery configuration was a very rare option and was it not only offered in the Scandinavian countries? You guys had some very special options because of the cold winters as I understand it.

There was also an option for a gas heater that was in the front trunk as well. Did Canada get these too or am I crazy?

The front trunk heater was the option M60....I think more or less for Canada only.
The twin batteries was the option M558.

I can't speak for American Car makers, but Eurpoean makers have for years been playing with battery weight distribution. Early 911s had a battery in each of the front 'nose' corner sections for weight distribution if I remember correctly.
BMW moved the trunk mounted battery you always had on 3 Series E-30 Coupes and Sedans when they built the E-30 Convertibles, up to the Right Front engine compartment, on a tray. Then mounted a heavy metal weight assembly in place of the missing normally mounted R/R fender area battery.
It used to come loose with time and rough streets, tearing the sheet metal mounting areas of the body... 
Some of it comes down to real estate, Location Location Location, where do we have spare space to put the battery ?.
