hi all- does anyone have a picture of where the reverse/back up light switch is on an automatic 1981 VW rabbit cabrio? I thought it was under the battery/airbox area, but no luck. maybe that is for the manuals only?

Thanks!

thanks guys. yes I did find that switch under the shifter and thought that might be it. I couldn't find a way to easily test it like a more basic 2 pong switch.

Any idea what this means? I see the black and blue wire to the switch, but I don't see a black wire. Do they mean to just jump power to the black and blue wire to see if the back up lights go on?

Yes, you are jumping switched 12V power directly to the lights. The instructions failed to include the early automatics Mad ; that's been corrected:

1. Remove shifter cover, disconnect the black/blue wire and black/gray wire* (will be combined with gray/red wire) and jumper them.

2. Turn the ignition switch to the battery-on position. If the reverse lights turn on, the switch and/or contact sweep is/are faulty and should be replaced.

*I don't have wiring diagrams for the 1980-1982 models. This wire color may be different in your car, but will be combined with the wire going to the shift console bulb.

Thanks Kamz. I didn't have any luck with the back up lights. I added keyed power to each of these wires and both together and no luck. Setting aside the keyed power where is the power supposed to come from in this circuit? Should 1 of these wires have power when the key is turned on?

Power is routed through the black/gray wire via fuse #9. Check fuse #9 to ensure it's good; if it is, check for key-on power there at the fuse terminals (don't recall which fuse terminal end is the feed on those old, pre-CE1 panels). And, yes, that is a key-on circuit. The shifter bulb is illuminated any time the key is on; when you shift to reverse, the sweeper bridges the contacts on the switch, sending 12V to the reverse/backup lights.

If you jumpered 12V directly to the black/blue wire (not switched, directly from the battery) and the lights still didn't come on (and the bulbs are definitely good), I'd suspect a bad ground. For the tail light assemblies, their grounds are in the trunk, IIRC.

And thank you for the photos; they confirm that the early cars have the same wiring.

thanks Kamz. I made some good progress today. I was able to run a secondary keyed hot line to the switch (in place of the gray/red wire) which activated the back up lights when I shifted into reverse.

It seems the problem is between the panel and the gray/red wire running to the switch not having power. The fuse in #9 is good and there is power at #9. I didn't see any broken or disconnected wires behind the panel.

I'll give it another look, but worst case I'll just have to run a keyed hot wire under the center console.
