Hey guys- longtime listener, first time caller.
Hopefully y'all can help...
I have a '68 Type 1 with a newer rebuilt 1600. I put a new clutch pack and bowden tube in it a few years ago and have had intermittent issues with it since, specifically the clutch cable adjustment. I had the cable adjusted on the release arm to where there were no more threads left, no where to go and still not engaging most gears correctly.
I barely made it home from work the other day. The last few blocks I had to jam it into gear and as I drove up my driveway, the right side shaft locked. It wouldn't budge even with the trans in neutral.
I got underneath it and disconnected the clutch cable completely and the release arm back at a vertical position. I had the bug up on jack stands and she would barely turn over because the right shaft was still engaged-- the right wheel would spin and the bug would shutter to a stop.
I'm not a transmission guy so I wonder if this is the problem? Any ideas? |

You're new to VWs, I understand. Search and learn how to check for broken welds on the clutch tube, a broken one can prevent correct clutch cable adjustment and operation. And more than one can be broken (there are three).
Clutch cables can also stretch, pedal hooks can wear and break, even the clutch pedal itself can crack and break. Ask me how I know this ! _________________ 1970 VW (owned since 1972) and 1971 VW Convertible (owned since 1976), second owner of each. The '71 now has the 1835 engine, swapped from the '70. But it's stuck in one gear, it won't stop even with the stick in neutral.
Cusser, the pedal assembly is almost brand new and the loop that the cable hooks onto in the tunnel is good.
Would broken welds or a stretched cable explain the shaft being stuck in one gear? That right rear wheel spins, you can tell it does with great effort. If I manually pull that clutch arm forward do you think that "locked" wheel will stop spinning?
Thanks for the help! |

Don't overlook taking off the right rear drum and doing a look-see....and see if the drive shaft turns then.... _________________ 1970 VW (owned since 1972) and 1971 VW Convertible (owned since 1976), second owner of each. Verify neutral. On the ground see if you can manually turn the engine over. |
