not sure where best to list this but i need some help, i have a WWII VW part i want to 3D print, i have a 3d printer, my son has a 3d scanner, but he cant get a good enough scan, i have been looking around trying to find someone.

when i contact people that call themselves "professional 3d scanning experts", they expect me to send them a CAD file, i explain no it is a physical part, they cant help, also seems like these people are always in Bangladesh or someplace like that.

i did find 1 place, but they wanted $2000 to create a list of millions of points, that i then could pay someone else to make into an .stl file, no, i dont have the kind of money, and i want 1 place to do it all

why is this so difficult? amazon has a ton of scanners for sale, i have tried 2, but both did not work because my computer is too old (3 years)

does anyone here got a 3d scanner setup, or know someone that does? i really want to get this project off the ground, i think VW folks will really like what i want to make.

Sounds liie it might be easier to go old tech and cast it using resin and a silicone mould.

I'm with busdaddy but then I'm old school. what about a school or tech college, might be worth asking if they would do it as an exercise...

There is a new scanning technique simple enough that you simply video 360 degrees around the item with a hand held phone. Then give the program one dimension, such as height of finished part, and it calculates all the other dimensions and angles and produces a 3d program. I have seen the result but not the actual scan. A friend has used it.

An interesting thing happens in forums where everyone starts parroting the same thing and "common knowledge" takes over.
Most experts aren't.

I've tried scanning with phones (I favour Sony phones and they released an app for scanning years ago). Even with the latest apps and phones, the quality is terrible.

Phones (and I'm guessing most domestic/hobby hand-held scanners) have to use G-sensors to work out where they are relative to the object as you move round it. The sensors aren't that accurate.

Edit - I'm confusing CMMs with 3D scanners here...
Commercial scanners are usually mounted on articulated arms that have angle sensors on each joint, which allow the software to know exactly where the scanner head is relative to the object. Maybe there are some that can use lasers to locate the scanner, but either way, that kit's not cheap, which explains why commercial scanning companies charge so much.

That said; dedicated hand-held scanners are supposed to be 'OK', if you believe the manufacturers.

FWW; surface texture and albedo affect how well objects scan. There are tricks that can improve that, like dusting shiny objects with powder to reduce their abledo, and adjusting the lighting to account for the object's colour, but I doubt a hand held scanner would be accurate enough to produce a scan that could be converted straight to a .stl for printing, without correction to fix artifacts.
