I'll be letting go of my SR2 next week. It's been garage kept and runs exceptionally well. I've tried to keep it as original as possible but no two came out exactly alike soooo the term "original" is subjective at best. It has the air-cooled VW motor that began life as a 1600cc but is now 1750 with a 2 barrel weber carb. The Points & Condenser system was replaced with electronic ignition and an oil cooler system was also added. Again. It runs great and will top out at a little over 100mph.
No rust...the pans are solid. The fiberglass is in great shape for being 50 years old and the steering and suspension are tight.
Way back when, I think it was Car & Driver, described the SR/SR2 as everything the Porsche 914 should have been.....this one definitely is.
The seats and covers are new. The dash is in good shape. It is not cracked or chopped up. I did cut two holes in the bottom to pass the cable for the oxy/fuel mix LED readout. I also installed a kill switch. Currently there is a parasitic drain on the battery that is proving elusive. I wanted a kill switch installed anyway so it just pushed me to get it done.
Obviously, there are other things you could do...it's a Manx...there is always something you can do. If I end up keeping it, I'll most likely contact American Wire and install a new wiring harness and work on having a targa top made.....the top and side windows are decades gone.
I'm selling it or thinking about selling it because I'm buying a boat and planning on sailing the Great Loop for the next year. I hate the thought of it going into storage. I could also use the cash to help offset the cost of the trip but I wont give it away. I know what it's worth and will not remotely consider a lowball offer.
I've also got a brand new spare engine case, pistons, cylinder heads, push rods and tubes, brand new cam and 2 Weber carbs...pretty much everything you would need to rebuild the engine twice...no joke.
As I said, I'm not pressed to sell....right now I am just wondering of anyone would even be interested. If so, drop me a DM and let's talk.
